Is there a place that rents for Jordan Lake?I tried calling around about this last year and I think I remember Jordan Lake not having anything.

I was using a kayak and a paddle board belonging to my gf's parentsbut I am going to try to buy a canoe

I was tempted by the $400 tiny kayaks at some of the outdoor stores. But alas, such luxuries are not for the likes of nomads such as myself.

not unless you become a serious nomadand get around via kayak

I used to take a 2 day whitewater canoeing trip down the haw river every year.

I canoe. Used to get out and do it every weekend, but now i have a boat with a motor and have become lazy. I went out to Falls on Saturday and did some paddling and fishing. You can get a canoe for cheap on craigslist and you can transport them with about anything. I used to put my canoe on top of my Honda Accord and just use some foam blocks and some straps to keep it down. Let me know if you have any questions. I have been paddling my whole life and even taught it for a while.

I hear New York has some pretty serious canoe traffic problems.

I do a little bit (Paddled 2,200 miles down the Mississippi River in 2005 with the missus)http://sourcetosea.net/

^ so was it mostly flat water, marathon paddling? Or did pick out a route that was dicey for a while?I assume it was boring once you got to the main part of the Mississippi.

A little bit of white-ish water in the upper section of northern Minnesota. The river was a flood stage for the first month of the trip. The last 1,100 miles or so was some big damn water, with a bunch of freaky eddies and whirlpools near the wingdams. It's 1-2 miles across, and moving millions of cubic feet of water, so stuff gets weird quick if you're not paying attention. We were averaging about 45-55 miles a day below St Louis.

I canoe in the arbermarle sound and the rivers/tributaries there. Lots of wildlife and tons of fish to catch.went for 5 miles just last week.

^^ woah! thats awesome. I'd love to do a long distance trip like that. How often did you resupply?
4/9/2012 11:43:58 AM
hey Johnny Swank, I think you're my neighbor
4/9/2012 1:39:39 PM
Snewf - you on Kilgore?1985 - full about once every 5-7 days, but we picked up stuff along the way in towns if we stopped to grab lunch or something. Resupply was waaay more difficult below St Louis though, as the towns were way farther off the river. We'd carry about a 10-15 gallons of water with us below there, but go through it in a few days (July was H-O-T)

we used to do weekend trips down the neuse and cape fear back in the day. my dad sold his old towne canoe last year and it made me very sad.

Phelps is maybe 200 yds from my crib. I'm totally ready for another trip. Wife and I are probably going down some NC river in late fall for a couple of weeks. Prob either the Catawba or Yadkin
4/9/2012 1:59:35 PM

4/9/2012 2:05:28 PM
hey what's better... a sit on top kayak or sit in kayak? (for a first time boat)
4/9/2012 2:15:08 PM
Depends on what you wanna do really. A sit on top is easier to fish from and get back in (on) if you fall out. A sit-in is typically faster, holds gear lower, warmer, is usually a little lighter. For just dicking around, a sit on top's fine, but if you're trying to cover some miles, a sit in is the way to go.
4/9/2012 2:21:00 PM
sit in is better
