Lost my car key (all keys actually). Don't have a spare. Car is locked. What can be done?I know this is another country, so the available options might vary, but anything can help.Called Toyota, they told me to bring the car to them. How will the towing company open and start my car? Hangar and hotwire?Anybody had this happen to them or know of someone whom it happened to? What did you/they do?Thanks.Edit: I was thinking in terms of my previous car, which was an automatic. Since this is manual, all they have to do is lower the handbrake and then tow it, right? Towing company won't open it, they'll just tow it. Toyota dealership can order a duplicate key from the VIN number.

I can tell you what not to do. Do not ever, under any circumstances, sniff another man's used boxer shorts.

also... you park in neutral?
4/28/2012 8:34:27 AM
my car is a stick, and i ususally just leave it in neutral when i parkunless i'm on an incline

Do you have a match tonight?
4/28/2012 3:14:31 PM
If the key is visible in the car, a good locksmith can make a key to match it just by looking at it.

Duh I know how towing works, you fattie.Thing is all the people I was calling said the car had to be opened first and they couldn't do it. They were saying I had to get the car opened first by someone else, and then they could come and tow it to the dealership. Hence my post in the "What are you thinking now" thread, around that time.It was really frustrating as I was on the phone for 4 hours calling Toyota and towing company and local flavor of the AAA that I have a membership in. The latter was saying my membership doesn't cover the case of a lost key, but that if the key was locked inside the car, they could come and open it for me. I was like WTF whether the key is inside or lost outside, it is the same procedure for you, so come and open the damn thing. And they were like no, sorry, situation not covered. I couldn't change my story; had I known that, I would have told them the key was inside.Anyway, one of my students hooked me up with an expert key cutter who will come and open the car, and also make me a key! I didn't know that those regular key cutters who make copies of your home/office keys can also make car keys. Anyway, he is coming in the evening to my place.Problem is this situation happened at the same time as a prolapsed disc (in too much pain since Saturday morning; can't sit; can stand and walk with a limp; can't get to my physiotherapist till Monday afternoon) and a critical work week when I can't take a day off. Add to that loads of marking for which I need to sit and mark.

One time I locked my keys in my car, in the ignition, with the car running at a gas station. The gas station exploded, everyone died.

as a side note, is it true that if you leave your car in four-wheel-drive it can't be towed, or will be fucked up if they try to tow it?
4/29/2012 9:12:35 AM
^^ There are still car keys without that fancy shit, right?
4/29/2012 9:26:00 AM

I was taught to leave it in gear
5/1/2012 9:26:38 AM
^that's what I do. + the parking brake.
5/1/2012 9:36:28 AM
^^^ best to leave it in reverse. some saabs wont let you take the key out unless its in reverse...
5/1/2012 4:11:19 PM
so what's the logic behind leaving it in reverse, or in "gear"? (which gear?)
5/1/2012 4:15:00 PM
definitely leave it in gear if you're parked on an incline
5/1/2012 4:17:15 PM
and if horizontal?
5/1/2012 4:17:59 PM
when i used to drive a stick i'd just neutral + parking brake if i was on a flat surface
5/1/2012 4:18:50 PM
I would say that if for some reason it did start to roll, its not going to get as much speed going as if it were in neutral.
5/1/2012 4:19:36 PM
reverse or first, bro
5/1/2012 4:19:48 PM
