shit, charter schools shouldn't get tax money, much less a fake online one.

Doesn't NC DPI run it's own virtual school? I don't see how they can complain about the virtual school model. I did read that the company that will run NC Learns is a bit shady.
6/30/2012 7:20:31 AM
i'd like to see the research showing that a virtual classroom is developmentally appropriate for a 5 year old.

6/30/2012 9:05:31 AM
^3 My understanding is the school being virtual isn't the real issue but the for-profit company proposing it.
6/30/2012 9:53:40 AM
^^^ me too. that's what this charter school would allow us to create.[Edited on June 30, 2012 at 9:54 AM. Reason : we can't learn what works if we don't try things]
6/30/2012 9:54:08 AM
also, i disagree with using taxpayer money for a for-profit school, especially for a concept that isn't backed by much (any?) research.
6/30/2012 12:11:51 PM
DPI runs online classrooms, for example your kid is having trouble in a subject and would rather do that online and go to school for the restthis is a full-time virtual charter school, you don't have the option of switching between in person and online
6/30/2012 12:23:17 PM
but you won't allow any research to be done on the project because you won't allow it to go forward anywhere because there's no research on it[Edited on June 30, 2012 at 12:27 PM. Reason : ]

i disagree on the use k-5, probably fine 6-8, good to go for high school
6/30/2012 12:27:52 PM
found this on the dpi website, an interesting skim but i haven't read the whole thing: http://www.ncpublicschools.org/docs/intern-research/reports/ncvps.pdfwhat dpi is doing now with that program in the research is not the same thing as what i think this charter school wants to do.

there is so much socialization in school even through hs - having to work with people you disagree with or don't get along with, etc - but at the hs level i suppose you're old enough (maybe?) to make that judgment call along with your family. if i had done something like that i would have been working a lot more at the same time so i'd have gotten my social skills there i suppose.[Edited on June 30, 2012 at 12:36 PM. how can they present any research when you won't let them do anything that you would classify as research? you don't get the catch-22 here, meg
6/30/2012 12:34:27 PM
if you're the private company, convince some homeschooling parents to enroll their kids in your program
6/30/2012 12:36:13 PM
i can't understand why anyone thinks this is a good idea.
6/30/2012 12:38:14 PM
i actually misread that article as saying for-profit, but it actually said non-profit, so my bad on that part. the funding for the non-profit is from a for-profit company. also, i didn't say i don't support research. but before a program is implemented like that i think some research should be done on the issue. either looking at programs in other places or i don't know what else. i'm not saying i know how the research should be done, but i want to see it before i'm going to say i'm OK with 5 year olds playing on the computer instead of going to a classroom. hell, show me some research on young children in general that shows they benefit from not being around peers. also, i'm pretty sure you don't know a damn thing about a child development so, personally, i don't consider anything you say on the subject to be relevant whatsoever. but ANY research would come in the form of allowing such a program to exist. And any such program which exists will require an expenditure of tax-payer funds in some form. That's the whole damned point, Meg.I understand your concern, but you have a requirement for existence which specifically precludes existence. I share your concern, as do others, but you must realize that what you are saying is akin to "the beatings will continue until morale improves."[Edited on June 30, 2012 at 12:44 PM. Reason : ]

6/30/2012 12:43:29 PM
very true.
6/30/2012 12:45:20 PM
like i said, show me the research that says 5 year olds benefit from playing on the computer rather than being around peers. doesn't take having a program such as the one described to figure that out considering a shit ton of research has already been done on the subject.
6/30/2012 12:46:16 PM
6/30/2012 12:46:22 PM
there are several universities, some in this very state, who research the subject regarding neurotypical and atypical children. so you could probably find it there.[Edited on June 30, 2012 at 12:48 PM. Reason : ]
6/30/2012 12:47:00 PM
and? that doesn't mean that your requirement for existence specifically precludes existence of this program
6/30/2012 12:48:46 PM
and what? you asked where to find it. and in my opinion it does, and the state board of education seems to believe the same thing if they expect to be funded by taxes.[Edited on June 30, 2012 at 12:50 PM. Reason : ]
6/30/2012 12:49:54 PM
ahhh. so no research can actually be done on the subject because you won't allow it, but you will declare that it has been, and it is unsatisfactory.and I'm not surprised that the State Board of Education doesn't want competition with it's shitty system. Who in any position of power would want anyone else showing that they are shitty?[Edited on June 30, 2012 at 12:51 PM. Reason : ]

you can't read. did you go to an online school??
6/30/2012 12:51:08 PM
I'm quite able to read. You just don't comprehend that you have set up an impossible requirement for this program.
6/30/2012 12:52:36 PM
public schools aren't perfect. the solution is not to allow 5 year olds to play on starfall.com all day instead of having to learn that punching another kid in the face is not the way to get a yellow crayon.my requirements are not impossible. do the research for virtual schools. i'm not paying for it.[Edited on June 30, 2012 at 12:55 PM. 6/30/2012 12:53:45 PM
and how will the research be done if everyone else says the same thing? ANY research will require an expenditure of taxpayer funds. You know why? BECAUSE IT'S FUCKING EDUCATION AND ALL EDUCATION REQUIRES SOME EXPENDITURE OF TAXPAYER FUNDS. Again, ANOTHER impossible requirement you have imposed. They are supposed to show that their school can work, but the only way they can do that is to have the kids out of regular schools and in their schools, but you won't allow their school to be considered a school, so the kid can't by law can't be put in that because it's not a school according to the state. You won't allow the research to actually be done, and then you say that it hasn't been researched.the beatings will continue until morale improves.we will keep having these meetings five times a day until more work gets done]
6/30/2012 12:56:53 PM
you're not really making a whole lot of sense right now. i'm not sure you really understand how the education system in this country or state works. i can see how, because it's confusing even to people who have to navigate it on a regular basis. i'm done with you, because you don't have enough of a knowledge base on the subject for me to consider engaging with you in this argument to be interesting or worthwhile anymore.[Edited on June 30, 2012 at 1:00 PM. if I'm not making sense, it's because you aren't trying.how are they supposed to do ANY research when you won't allow them to do the specific things that generate the research you want?
