Seems to be a lot of debate out there on the healthy breads. Is the answer "no bread is the healthy bread"? I sure hope not. I am looking to switch to a healthy bread that doesn't have concerns with blood sugar, fat or cholesterol. Some say rye some say sourdough. What does TWW think?

^^ exactly.Go with breads made with sprouted grains. They are more nutritious than regular breads. Here is the most famous brand: http://www.foodforlife.comInfo:http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sprouted_breadhttp://articles.latimes.com/2009/oct/12/health/he-nutrition12

a widely-available loaf that is leaps and bounds better for you (or, rather, "less worse") is nature's own whole grain (dark brown bag)it's also about $3/loaf instead of the $1 that shitty white bread costs...but it's worth it
7/26/2012 6:51:23 AM
a healthy bread is one consumed in moderation.as with most things.
7/26/2012 6:52:11 AM
I prefer whole grain breads

Arnolds has some pretty good whole grain breads.
7/26/2012 8:21:09 AM
some hipster nutrition guy on the news just said he had "sprouted grain toast" for breakfast... doesn't sound very nutritious to have bread as the main part of a meal.
7/26/2012 8:45:48 AM
^^ This. I rarely eat bread, but when I do I eat their whole grain with double fiber.
7/26/2012 8:56:28 AM
Arnolds is great but check the ingredients because i found they put a lot of garbage fake ingredients in there to make seem "healthier." i have found that at whole foods, they get some bread from 9th street bakery and their stuff is fresh and doesn't have the preservative crap in it that a lot of pre-packaged bread companies use

whole wheat is bad for you. it causes a violent spike in blood sugar. I'm looking for a healthy bread not just a real bread. you guys have posted real bread as an alternative to fake white bread but nobody has posted healthy real bread as an alternative to real bread.
7/26/2012 1:50:52 PM
^ uh did you not read my post?
7/26/2012 1:53:05 PM
^^you need to just avoid bread. anything with wheat will increase your blood sugar, and the gluten free stuff is mostly corn, rice, or potato starch. Sourdough will have a lowered effect because the fermentation process consumes some of the sugar but it won't be nil.[Edited on July 26, 2012 at 1:59 PM. Reason : .]

there's one of those sliced breads out there that only has 40 calories per slice, but it tastes like wheat bran. and there's all sorts of dark magic technology in there.
7/26/2012 2:01:35 PM
No but rye and pumpernuckle cause like 65% rise as whole wheat. That is a huge difference when you talk about a lifetime. Also it means you end up with the same difference if you put jam on it or something.
7/26/2012 2:02:33 PM
Rye and pumpernickel bread both have wheat flour in them. Are you looking for a bread with zero wheat flour or just some of the wheat flour subbed out for something else? They sell plenty of versions of the latter at places like Trader Joe's and Great Harvest.
7/26/2012 2:04:47 PM
an alternative to "wheat bread" so yes if wheat is subbed out then i guess rye would be a good idea but i was looking for even more options possibly better options so i can try them all and see if i actually like any. if i end up liking a bread that is more healthy than wheat then why not eat it the rest of my life?

Bread is fine, it just shouldn't be a staple of your diet. The glucose is great before/after you work out (this means lifting weights), but if you're the average person that is overweight and jogs a couple times a week or something, you could probably benefit from eliminating bread.Bread (just like sugar, candy, whatever) isn't actually "bad" for you, it's just wasted potential. You can eat a certain amount of calories, so if you waste 500 calories on bread, that's less nutritious food you can eat without gaining fat. If it fits your macros, etc
7/26/2012 2:08:27 PM
I've tried to limit/do away with bread in my diet; I just have yet to find any quick/healthy/easy meal I like and can make in the morning and take to work (other than dinner leftovers).
7/26/2012 2:10:09 PM
That's easy.JerkySteamed vegetablesChicken breastHard boiled eggsYou could also make "unwiches" with the lettuce bun. I've never done that, but it's fine, I guess.

^^^done those (except jerky). And several of those I consider to more of snacks than lunch (I have 3 small meals + 2-3 snacks per day; however, I like to really distinguish a meal from a snack... maybe it's just mental, but I always feel like I'm starving if I don't have a "meal"). Though, I should retry breadless sandwiches... because bread tends to make me want mayo + cheese (not a killer, but could be replaced with something better for you).^^need to limit your drug intake.[Edited on July 26, 2012 at 2:15 PM. Whatever, fat people eat bread, doughnuts, pizza, ice cream, pasta, potato chips, etc like its going out of style. No one needs bread. It doesn't provide any essential vitamins or nutrients. Cut the carbs, up the protein, and eventually maybe you'll be able to jog a mile without almost dying. Its not that fucking complicated.
