I'm just curious- but were any of y'all ever Specific Learning Disabled, Other Health Impairment or listed as something else? What did you think about what the public school system provided for you?I'm just curious- but do you realize how much work goes in to helping the students that don't learn like "the rest of us"? Now that I'm 30, I think I could be listed as severely dislexic and attention deficit....but I'm wondering what's going on with the kids these days.......

mild adhd and mild to moderate ocd here, but only diagnosed when i started seeing a shrink for depression and anxiety when i was going through a divorce last year at age 29.i dunno if that's the school system's fault, my parent's fault...or if there's really no one to fault? meh.oh and i should mention that i wasn't learning disabled, in fact just the opposite. i graduated high honors, top 5% of my class. i guess i just learned to deal with my issues, though i'm still not convinced this recent diagnosis is entirely accurate. meh again.]

1999 - my freshmen year of high school i had bone cancer; the school classified me as other health impaired so my absences wouldn't count against me, could have a tutor come out to the house, etc.worked out good for me, kept me from being a year behind. just the classification itself would have allowed me to take the SAT by myself, take as much time as i wanted, etc.... i remember thinking that would help kids out that "don't take tests well"

ok, maybe i should have said that i didn't have a hard time in class, and i managed to do just fine in school, taking advanced and AP classes....so that's what i mean by not being learning disabled.or something. whatever.[Edited on August 28, 2012 at 8:08 PM. Reason : .]

No, but my son is entering his second year of the public school's preschool special education program and will enter kindergarten as a 'special ed' student. I cannot tell you about the upper grades, but they do a phenomenal job with the younger children with early intervention always at the forefront of everyone's minds.

UB/AG fall under the exceptional child umbrella as well as special ed.

A lazy ass teacher left out a strong base, NaOH to be exact which let some jerk off special needs aka needed to get his ass spanked a few times as a child that ultimately ended up in my left eye. Burnt most of my iris, tear duck and part of my eye lid in my left. Really fucked up my vision, normal tear production, etc...I missed like 3-4 months of class. Got to take all my EOG tests alone, and SAT alone. I also had my SAT read aloud. One of the stories was so boring, I fell asleep. I also wore sunglasses until I graduated. I did get called Steve Wonder sometimes, but I didn't give a damn. I had a woman come check on me, making sure the teachers weren't dicks, giving me what I needed, etc. She really cared, and did what she could.I ultimately did have a procedure to correct most of it.
