This may be an elaborate legal trap being sprung by Murdoch. Anyone knows at this point that if you publish a story too embarrassing or critical of Trump, he'll sue. He's been too emboldened by his cucking of CBS, ABC, Columbia, and a few others, so he feels untouchable.

If WSJ doesn't back down, there's a good chance that Cheeto tries to get the DOJ to handle the case for him, claiming that it somehow impinges on his Presidential abilities. He'll consider it because he loves grifting and getting other people to pay his legal bills. That it affects him as President is bullshit, but is still a colourable enough claim to pass the initial sniff test to get a judge to consider it.

This is where you need to watch carefully. If his lawyers try to remove this to federal court and make the US a party to the lawsuit, look at how hard WSJ fights that attempt. If they agree, or put up only token resistance, then it's a trap. If Trump doesn't try to remove it, and the WSJ does, then it's absolutely a trap. At this point, the WSJ doesn't care if they "win or lose" the lawsuit, they got what they wanted. Also watch to see if the WSJ files counterclaims for damages. If they do that, it will make it much harder for Trump and the DOJ to drop the suit.

Getting the US to be a party to the lawsuit would open exposure to discovery of an array of documents that would be out of reach if the government isn't party to the suit. The very files that are supposedly being suppressed by the DOJ right now are highly relevant to this case, for obvious reasons. Getting the US to lead the lawsuit makes those documents immediately available for discovery, and that discovery would almost certainly be done on the public docket for most of the material.

Murdoch runs a news outfit, and doesn't particularly like Trump. Many of his audience want this information to be released publicly. He could use a lawsuit from Trump to give them what they want. He also likely knows a good deal about what's in those documents, and knows they probably implicate Trump or his cronies in very bad ways, so getting their release helps Murdoch, even if it doesn't drive a ton of ratings.

The other possibility is that WSJ has a lot more damning stuff waiting in the wings that Trump doesn't know about. I suspect that's also a high likelihood, but I think the first option is equally true. Murdoch hates Trump, is tired of his shit, and can use this severely damage him or the MAGA base.
