We take care of our neighbors little dogs occasionally when they go out of town, just going over 2-3 times a day to let them out of kennel, go to the bathroom, get some exercise and food. This is the 3rd or 4th time we have done it over the last couple years.

Every single time one of the smoke alarms has been beeping once a minute due to low battery. I’ve got so many unanswered questions. Is it like that all the time? Do they live like that? Do they put in low batteries just when the go out of town so the dogs hear something? They are Mexican, is there some cultural thing I don’t know about?

It’s been over the course of years, so we feel like it’s too late just ask about it now. We never go in the house any other time so don’t know if its always is like that or not. It boggles the mind.

Question number 1, are your neighbors deaf?

[Edited on April 3, 2024 at 6:44 PM. Reason : Question 2, Mexican or spanish? Or both]

Mexican, and not definitely not deaf.

As a privileged white male who changes the batteries on their six smoke detectors at least twice a week, this stereotype is SO true. I can’t believe you’ve never heard that Mexicans need the low battery alert to keep them awake throughout the day/night because they are such hardworking people who get little rest (or appreciation).

^^the main reason is it’s upstairs, where I’ve never been and normally wouldn’t have any reason to go in the normal course of the dog watching duties, just feels a little intrusive. If it were downstairs I would have 100% done it a year ago

Update: I have changed the battery! It actually was downstairs this time. I’m like 98% certain that in the past it was upstairs, so that also seems to imply that they do not just live with it constantly for years. We’ll see if they mention anything when they get home

do they turn off the thermostat when they leave town? If the temperature drops, the battery may be impacted by the cooler temperature and chirp as it will read as, "Low."

Maybe they were trying to line them up to eventually play the beginning of this song https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y6_mfv4qems#t=15s

Lol, I found myself on Julius Hodges's social media page recently, and he has a post about this. I just went back and looked and it says:

"#random I'm currently interrogating two smoke detectors in my home because they have it sounding like a Nike commercial in my house (you now that commercial). I've changed the batteries twice, disconnected both, shut off the power, etc all to no avail. STILL CHIRPING "

Had an apartment next door to me years ago where this shit drove me nuts for a solid week. Apparently whoever was in there had moved out, so me and the guy on the other side broke in to change the battery because it was driving him crazy too. Rental office wouldn't do shit about it, had to escalate the situation.
