I think it's definitely worth reading if you haven't before and enjoyed the first season. The show has stayed true enough that the little details should be useful and not really contradict the show. Also, the book is very well-written.

Someone briefly explained it from like the first episode or whatever when she went in to the water that was too hot. They (the Targaryens) have dragons blood or something. Feel free to correct me, those who read the book.

It's just kind of weird because we didn't see all that much fantasy throughout the first 9 episodes, and then within the closing 2 minutes of the inaugural season we see two huge semi-wtf things.

Did you forget when she didn't burn her hands handling the hot eggs earlier in the season? Then the servant grabbed them and was instantly blistered.

"Fire cannot kill a dragon"

^^They've also alluded to it on a couple of other occasions. At one point she placed the dragon eggs in the fire, took them out, held them and wasn't harmed; her slave tried to stop her in the process, touched one of the dragon eggs and burned the shit out of her hand.

Also when Kharl Drogo dumped the molten gold on Viserys' head, Daenerys said some shit like "if he was a real dragon, fire couldn't harm him."

Good episode, LOVED the part with the Night's Watch riding north of the wall. I thought the funeral pyre/aftermath scene wasn't quite as badass as it was in the books, but, you know, that's how it goes.

BTW don't know if it was noticeable if you haven't read the books but one of those dragons was breastfeeding on dat 190% Targaryen tittymilk.

Holy sh*t that was awesome.

Now that I've finished the first season, I'm going to go get the books and read them because WOW what an awesome series.

I mean I was as surprised as anyone when they lopped off Ned Stark's head, but what a friggin amazing ending.

When does Season 2 come out!?

Spring 2012 is what I think was said. Long time to wait

but it does give me plenty of time to read the books.

i must have missing something with Darys and the dragon eggs. what caused them to finally hatch in that final fire scene? why had they not hatched before? i get that she has the blood of the dragon so fire can not kill her but how does that translate to the eggs? need a bit explanation if possible

(and a side note, her titties are much smaller now then when we 1st saw them in the beginning of the season )

The eggs were just fossils.

She used Mirri Maz Duur's life to bring them back to life. Kind of like what she did with Drogo and the baby, except more successfully. At least that's how I understood it when I read that part in the book.

i don't see the big deal. Yeah the dragons will grow up, be really big, probably breath fire but they can be killed. They were ALL killed as it has been said many times so everyone knows how to kill them.

One point that the show hasn't focused on as its really more backstory is that when Aegon the Conquerer (Dany's great great grandfather I think) first conquered Westeros and reunited the 7 kingdoms he did it with dragons. Thats why the dragons are a big deal.

^^ Just because you know how to kill something doesn't mean doing it is a non issue. I know that if I wanted to kill a grizzly bear in close combat only using a knife all I need to do is get to it's throat...doesn't mean I can do it.

the show hasn't focused on it because the first book doesn't really get too much into it

here is a little info about one of the original dragons.

"Balerion was the largest of all the Targaryen dragons, and had jaws big enough to swallow a mammoth whole. his wingspan so vast that entire towns would fall under his shadow when he passed overhead."

One minor thing I disliked about the first season was that I hated the cast for Shae. Not at all what I had in mind (which is not always bad and isn't necessarily important) but also I just didn't like her character on the show much. Weak acting and the accent is just annoying imo. Not a big deal, it was just bugging me because her acting seems out of sync with the show.

I thought that was kind of the point. She alluded to, in that drinking game with the midget, that her past and family is nothing like they (or we) would think it was.

The "different-ness" about her lends itself to that story. Curious to see what comes out of it...

I've thought some of the casting choices were poor, but Shae isn't one of them. I never really had a strong picture in my mind of Shae, and I never pictured her as a girl (as I've seen some people say) because she seems very experienced.

This is why I recommend this series to people that say they've never really gotten into fantasy. In an overall sense it eases you into it. The prologue/first episode showed us the "Others", which immediately lets you know there is magic in their world.

Another way to look at the apparent lack of fantastical things is that nobody currently living has been a part of anything of that nature. Everyone always says the children of the forest are gone and were killed by the first men. Dragons are extinct blah blah blah. The Others and white walkers haven't been seen for over a thousand years. The characters in the series have never had a taste of these phenomenon. It's not like they are all around them and GRRM just left that stuff out of the story. They're just as surprised as you the reader are. Everyone around Dany immediately fell to their knees when they saw the dragons...

I understand that about the actual character in the show, I just mean the actual acting was out of sync. In other words her acting seems like a low-budget syfy show or B movie versus sharing scenes with Peter Dinklage and Jerome Flynn who have been great characters backed by strong acting. Maybe it is just her accent that I am not a fan of which is making me biased to her acting though.

Anyway, not a big deal. I just felt like I was very happy with the casting overall and that one was just "meh." Even someone like Michelle Fairley as Catelyn definitely isn't what I had in mind reading the book, but her acting has been very strong to the point where I think she was a great choice even if she was their second choice. Like I said though, no biggie. Just voicing my opinion. It's only a small complaint anyway. Great first season overall.

^^fwiw, in the books lancel looks like a younger version of jaime. since jaime is gone, he's the next best thing.

in the show, lancel looks like an even gayer loras.

^^^ Basically she is a grown woman and has a hole that needs filling; it's not in her heart. In the books they mention that he is a younger version of Jaime which is the reason she goes for him. The show doesn't really deliver in that.

lancel is kevan lannister's son. kevan is tywin's right hand man and brother. therefore lancel is cersei, jaime, and tyrion's first cousin.

These people have been fighting with swords and horses for thousands of years? Why haven't they evolved into fighting with something better? I mean no one has invent gunpowder? Semi automatic weapons? Radar? Fighter jets? This Westeros place is middle earth bullshit. Lazy ass white people IMO. How about some ingenuity for christ's sake instead of just sitting back on you laurels?

I got the impression that the dragons eggs were never *really* just stone when they were given to Danny, they had just never hatched. When Danny got in the super serious fire with them, they felt heat and warmth and mama's love and opened up. I never got the feeling that Miri's life had anything in particular to do with it, other than to add heat and fodder to the fire.

Goddammit, I hate googling stuff for answers to the questions I have. It usually ends up with a spoiler. I just went to look up the names of the direwolves, and then I see (names blanked):

_____ _____'s wolf is named ________. He dies with _____ _____ at the battle of _____.

Luckily as soon as I realized I was reading a spoiler, I stopped, and didn't catch the name of the battle. At least that means that this battle could take place next season/book, or several from now.

But damn. If you intend on not spoiling shit, don't go to any of the Game of Thrones wikis that people have created.

As far as the eggs go, I always considered them not eggs able to be normally hatched because they last dragons who were old enough to actually lay eggs died like 200 years before this story took place. That plus the fact that they were pushing the whole death pays for life thing.
