I can't believe fewer people watched Game of Thrones than Boardwalk Empire.

really? it's a fantasy related show with nearly all non-American stars versus a show covering a very popular film genre, set in a very popular time in American history, starring a well-known American actor which was also promoted heavily with a well-known American director being attached to it.

I think the quality of GOT is displayed on the graph though as it started out low and really picked up toward the end as opposed to BE which started out extremely high (due to the factors I listed above) and dropped/flattened out much lower.

I'm not saying BE is bad at all. It is just a little slow and not as good as I expected/hoped. It had all the momentum going into it's first season whereas GOT had an uphill battle and has handled it very well. I honestly would not be surprised to have GOT average more viewers than BE next season though if BE doesn't pick up the story.

ya gotta think that BE inherited the sopranos fanbase (another HBO mobster series).
More interesting is that TB gained the same volume in season 1 as GoT, but a higher % of its starting viewership than GoT. Neither of these is necessarily good for the longevity of GoT relative to its peers, except for one thing: low volatility.

If you are a typical investor and are comparing stocks, businesses, etc - you would weigh low volatility the highest in your valuation. Lower risk growth is usually preferable. So of the above shows(other than sopranos), which is the least risky in terms of growth potential if you are HBO?

The other thing to weight is that GOT will do great in DVD/Blu-Ray and other merchandise sales due to the type of foundation fanbase it attracts. Also, because it isn't relying on a tie to American history, it has had a much bigger international response than something like BE has and was bought by more international partner markets than BE. Those things will help keep GOT around, especially if the viewership actually increases for next season.

Not for anything, but I'm REALLY surprised that True Blood is on the bottom of that list. Everyone I know watches that show!

That's because there is nothing else on. It's entirely mediocre at best. Yet I still force myself to watch it.

True Blood isn't in the same ballpark, in terms of quality, as those other three shows.

That chart is only comparing first season numbers. True Blood averages like 5 million viewers now (ie higher than any other show on there) even though it is definitely the worst of all the shows on there. However, be thankful because TB is a low-budget, high-grossing show that lets HBO fund shows like GOT

My concern with those numbers is the cost of producing Game of Thrones. While I don't know the exact budget numbers for each, I imagine that Game of Thrones costs much more than those other shows (sets, locations, CGI, etc.), and it's costs are only going to rise as they get more ambitious and try to incorporate more battles and creatures (dragons & direwolves). If I remember, Rome was undone in part because of the tremendous production costs, shortening it from 5 planned seasons to 2.

Rome still cost almost twice as much as GoT did per season though. $100-110 million dollar bucks per season compared to $50-60 for GoT.

yea I remember reading rome was insanely expensive for a tv show, not sure what drove up the cost compared to game of thrones both have a lot of people with swords fighting around outside, I guess those sets of the roman metropolis must have been pretty tough to do but then again game of thrones has palaces and stuff too

I don't see GoT doing exceptionally well in side businesses. Nerds always overestimate the size of their population and their economic value.

Based on price alone, I think there is a good chance GoT doesn't end up being 1 book = 1 season. There is an even higher chance that fatass dies before he even finishes the damn thing, anyway

On a side note, the popularity of GOT has led HBO to sign Neil Gaiman's "American Gods" to a multi-season deal. This has the potential to be really good especially since Gaiman is helping on writing the script. I <3 HBO/

But a lot of people like it. If done well it could be a decent show; not sure how it could go multiple seasons.

i had mixed feelings about this series.

For one, having that Kal Drago guy die from a little flesh wound when he has evidently bigger scars on his body was dumb.

Having King Robert say "peace out I am going to leave the kingdom for a hunt while war is imminent" was dumb.

Having Ned Stark actually believe that the power hungry queen was going to adhere to the King Robert's last wishes was even more... dumb.

I still feel like the only TV series that are currently on now that are worth watching are Entourage and Mad Men.

He didn't die from the wound, he died from the maegis treatment of the wound. Dany was just being overprotective and allowed Mirri Maz Dur to get too close.

The other points you made were addressed more in the books and make more sense, but with only 10 episodes to tell the story, I feel like Ned's characterization was just a bit off...definitely seemed more dumb than honorable in the tv show vs the books.

the witch purposely infected drago?

the fear for his daughters combined with the dungeon overcame his rational thought?

and Robert liked hunting and drinking more than being a king. He was a shit king, and he had plenty of people back at court who could do the ruling while he hunted and drank and fucked. I don't see how that's "dumb" of the show, it's an accurate representation of what Robert was all about.

Sex, drink, and smashing Rhaegar Targaryen with his giant fucking warhammer.

as noted, the witch woman killed him with her "treatment"

it's not like he was planning 6 months at a resort...it was just a hunt, which was an extremely common form of entertainment for nobility in medieval times

there wasn't any war at the moment, and as others have noted, he had plenty of other folks to make preparation for him...this wasn't unreasonable at all, especially given his character (which, again as noted, was to be a crappy king who would rather have fun than rule properly)

i'm not sure what you're referring to...he didn't think cersei was going to adhere to anything, that's why he worked with littlefinger to gain control of the city watch (or whatever...i forget which group it was) before confronting her

Anyone in Ned's position would have known what was coming to him when Robert died. The way that it was played out in the series was over the top drama. Kind of like when Forrest Gump started running.
