If the season ended today and Edmonton won the lottery, here is what we would have:

Round 1, Pick 3
Round 2, Pick 3
Round 2, Pick 22
Round 3, Pick 3
Round 5, Pick 18
Round 6, Pick 3
Round 7, Pick 3

I'm sure we will be adding a few more to our collection in the coming weeks.

"Hoping to boost their blue line, the San Jose Sharks acquired defenseman Niclas Wallin from the Carolina Hurricanes on Sunday.

Along with Wallin, the Hurricanes also sent their own fifth-round pick in the 2010 Entry Draft to San Jose for Buffalo's second-round pick."

we're only 10 points out of the playoffs...

and we have one of the best records in the past 10 games in teh nhl (7-3). if we keep this up, we have a legitimate shot at making the playoffs...

well, we couldn't ask for a better debut from Peters, who looked super comfortable in net.

what's the word on Albany moving to Charlotte? any developments with that? that would be awesome and i'd definitely love going to those games when I have a chance.

"Charlotte’s minor league team, the Checkers, has called a news conference for Wednesday. The Checkers are expected to announce they will be come a minor-league affiliate of the Carolina Hurricanes.

The Canes’ top minor league affiliate is now the Albany River Rats.

The Canes have not confirmed the move, but the trend in the NHL is toward teams having their minor league affiliate closer to the parent club."

does this mean no new AHL team as expected or will the current ECHL checkers as we know them be gone and replaced by the Albany River Rats organization?

I don't think a new AHL team was ever expected. The Checkers' owner is buying the River Rats and moving them to Charlotte. The existing Checkers ECHL team will either move or fold I guess.

^I hope the Checkers move to Greensboro. It would be awesome to have minor league hockey in Greensboro again. Unfortunately, that's the city where real sports go to die. It's weird because the city actually supported the Monarchs pretty well and then when we get an NHL team for two seasons, and no one goes to the games.

As an aside, did anyone else buy seats upstairs at the Gbo Coliseum and move downstairs for Hurricanes games? They never checked tickets. Man I miss those days.

We never had to buy seats period. They had this thing where you test drove a Chevy (I think they have a similar thing going on right now) and got a voucher for 2 free tickets to the game. We would just go to the dealership and explain that we had no intention of ever buying a Chevy, and just wanted the vouchers. They would give us a stack of them. You took the voucher to the box office and they gave you any seat you wanted anywhere in the building, so we would sit on the glass. It was awesome but at the same time pathetic. Thankfully Greensboro was not an indicator of how things were going to work out here, otherwise the Canes would already be gone.

If my memory is correct, Greensboro still holds the record for attendance at a minor league hockey game with something like 24000 people. I want to say the game was against the Hampton Roads Admirals. Brubaker and Brophy were the coaches. Nick Vitucci was the goalie, I think Phil Berger and Shawn Wheeler were on that team. Those were the days. Greensboro was a great hockey city. For a while the Carolina Monarchs of the AHL had one of the best selling uni's period. Kevin Weekes was on that team. Bill Horn (who I have lit the lamp against several times in adult league) was on that team.

Man those were the days. The NHL did ruin that city from hockey, not to mention Rocco Scarfone who was part owner of the Generals.

Yeah, i didn't really mean a "new" franchise. Just a new-to-charlotte AHL team. The way your original post sounded i thought the ECHL checkers were just going to link with the Canes. I am definitely looking forward to some AHL hockey in charlotte, and i know people want to keep the Checkers name in town, but in my opinion i think to get more support and a rejuvenated fan base that this team needs a new brand. I can already hear the advertisements "Brand new team, Same great Checkers" and everyone in town saying "yeah right, i saw the checkers 5 years ago and they were terrible, i'm not gonna pay to see it again"

If the Checkers become the Hurricans minor league team, it might be the only case in the country of the largest city in the state housing the lower level affiliate of a smaller city's parent club, in any sport
