"Contrary to an early report on Wednesday morning, the Bruins are still trying to work out a deal with the Carolina Hurricanes to bring Ray Whitney to Boston, according to a source.

The hang-up still seems to be Whitney's desire for an extension with any team that acquires him. The 37-year-old (who will be 38 by the end of the playoffs) has reportedly been looking for a two- or three-year extension.

The Bruins could be trying to negotiate a package for Whitney and defenseman Joe Corvo."

a Whitney/Corvo combo should fetch a high return. and if that return is Wheeler, I might piss myself.

from dumbass Chip: Canes could be close to deal on Aaron Ward. Keep an eye on Anaheim. other deals in the works, apparently.

Aaron is a lot like Wallin. Never did anything amazing, but he was very solid for a long time. It is too bad his come back tour sucked ass so badly. GRITTY VETERAN AWAY!!!!!!

I wouldn't call a 4th-rounder much.

I seem to remember Toronto was upset with him last year when he couldn't steal games from them playing behind their talent laden lineup and shipped him off to Anaheim.

Maybe a decent backup and could develop into more over time.

^ Considering most of us would have been happy with a bag of practice pucks and/or a couple of passes to Disneyland then yes I consider that much.

why would the canes even . . . . ohhhhhh

if pogge shows up and starts all his sentences with "you know, as a goalie" i would say tripp needs to be ever so vigilant

in fact, the leafs were so high on pogge

that they kept him instead of rask when they offered a prospect for raycroft

and now i look like i'm parroting pierre instead of just being a goalie nerd

here's some 4th rounders taken in the last 15 yrs:
Sami Kapanen
Marc Savard
Michael Handzus
Joe Corvo
Ryan Malone
Jan Hejda
Nic Wallin
Ryan Callahan

After the top 3-5 players, the NHL draft is often a crapshoot

^^^ Fine, I'll add more:

Stefan Liv
Lubomir Visnovsky
Michel Ouellet
Brian McGrattan
Shawn Horcoff
Alex Ponikarovsky
Josef Vasicek
Adam Mair

Keep in mind that there are only ~400 fourth round picks in the past fifteen years, and just glancing quickly we've found almost 20 who are solid NHL contributers. That's not far from the percentage you'll find with late second rounders.

from Dreger: Canes are working on moving at least one more player. With Ward deal and another salary expected to go, it's likely Ray Whitney stays in Car

what's the point of keeping Whitney now? is he planning to stay with the Canes after this year?

someone explain to me why we want Whitney gone so bad?

is it his age added to the fact that he wants a contract extension and his value will probably never be this high again?

he's one of my favorite players so I'd be sad to see him go, but if those are the reasons then I completely understand

^^ There's no reason to think he won't, especially since he's added the provision to his NTC-waive requirements that makes him close to untradeable.

^ He's the best UFA winger on the market. We're not making the playoffs, so why not get some value? The whole contract extension thing has thrown a giant wrench in the process, because he's a perfect candidate for a standard rental.
