so the N5 has both CDMA and GSM radios? the second screen on the specs scroller shows the bands and the third screen mentions only t-mobile and sprint

i assume that - in terms of technology - anything that can be used on TMO can be used on AT&T? same for spring and VZW, though i'm sure VZW isn't going to let anyone use the N5 on their network

"Happy Halloween, everyone. Have a KitKat—Google's latest update to Android, that is, which Google just announced, along with the new Nexus 5. Here's what you need to know about the mobile OS update.

KitKat will bring even smarter and easier search to Android, according to the Official Google Blog, and, perhaps more importantly, it's going to be backwards compatible with older devices, so everyone can get in on the fun. A few of the prominent enhancements in KitKat include: P

Better Performance and Memory Usage

Many of KitKat's biggest improvements are under the hood. You should find that it performs better, especially when it comes to RAM. The Android Developer site states that "KitKat streamlines every major component to reduce memory use," so even old phones running KitKat should be faster and more responsive—even with as little as 512MB of memory. You should be able to mutli-task without your phone freezing more easily in KitKat.

Google Now Gets Easier and More Powerful

Android KitKat 4.4: An Upgrade For Everyone (Eventually)
The new version of Android is finally here, and its biggest feature is a new stage for an old favorite. Google Now is getting more limelight than… Read…
Google Now is getting a much bigger focus in KitKat, with easier access, more cards, and hands-free usage. How cool will it be when you can wake up your phone, start a search, take a photo and so on just by saying "OK Google"? It's like the futuristic Google Glass stuff, but on your phone.

Google Now will also find a place on your home screen if you like (and you can swipe left-to-right to access it), and Google will be adding more cards to make your phone even smarter, automatically suggesting things based on your interests, location, and lots more.

A New Dialer with Universal, Integrated Search

The Dialer is one of the oldest, most traditional apps on your phone, and KitKat brings a pretty big update. Now you'll be able to look up a number for a business or person directly from the phone dialer—searching across not just your contacts, but also Google Apps and nearby places. It works in reverse, too: your phone's caller ID will also be able to look up matches from Google's Maps listings if you receive a call from someone who isn't in your address book. That's pretty darn handy.

Everything You Didn't Know You Could Do with Google's Voice Commands

Voice search is one of those features that seems silly, but is awesome once you start using it. Not convinced? Here are a few ways to turn voice.
The integrated search runs throughout all of KitKat, so you'll be able to do a search for a recipe or restaurant and Google will take you directly to the right app. And if you're a fan of searching with your voice, like we are, you'll appreciate getting search results faster in KitKat.

Google Hangouts Is Adding SMS Support, Location Sharing, and Animated GIFs in Hangouts

Google began unifying messaging, video chat, and photos in Hangouts this year, but now they've finally taken the next step: your Hangouts app… Read…
Google announced this yesterday, and it means that Hangouts can be your go-to app for all of your instant messages, video calls, and text messages. If you hate having your conversations all over the place in a bunch of different apps, with KitKat you'll just need Hangouts, which replaces the old Messaging app.

The location sharing feature may be very convenient when you're meeting up with friends and don't want to have to keep texting each other "Where are you?"

Finally, if you're a fan of inserting emoji into your messages, there are lots you can add from the Google Keyboard in KitKat.

Improvements to NFC, Cloud Printing, and File Browsing

KitKat also includes a lot of improvements that app developers can make use of to enhance their apps. The NFC enhancements, for example, will automatically route you to the right app when you tap one of those pay-with-a-tap terminals. Printer manufactures can develop their own print services so you can easily print from your Android device to your specific printer. And the new storage access framework provides a consistent way to access files stored on other services from any other app (e.g., open or save files saved to Box or Dropbox from your mobile browser).P

KitKat also includes a full screen "Immersive Mode" for your apps, updates to the Downloads and Email app, HDR+ photography (on supported phones like the Nexus 5), infrared blasting for remote control of TVs, less battery-draining audio playback, and a lot more. Check out Google's official KitKat page to see more.

KitKat is out today on the Nexus 5, and is coming to the Nexus 4, 7, and 10, as well as the Samsung Galaxy S4 and HTC One Google Play edition in the next few weeks."

^^The nexus 5 does indeed have the correct CDMA radios to function with Verizon. However it's pointless, because it doesn't have a radio for band 13 LTE, Verizon's current flavor. It does support band 4, though, Verizon's aws spectrum.

To answer your question it both does and doesn't work on Verizon's network *IF* you could convince them to allow the device.

it has band 4 which from what i can tell is a new band that verizon just recently bought. i think it is only a very small band that covers a small area of the country. so basically no it doesnt support verizons lte band

^^have to ask lg/Google why their modem selection didn't include band 13. Probably because Verizon passed on the device, and it would be an added expense.

ordered a 16GB black today. Planning to activate my AT&T ST Sim when I get the phone. I'll miss the awesome coverage I have with Verizon, but I just can't justify the cost, or feeling stuck paying more for a phone to try and keep my grandfathered data plan. I could buy a different phone (Say, GSIII) and stretch it longer, but I'm only delaying the inevitable.

You could likely just have it flashed to one of the Verizon MVNO's like Page Plus or Selectel. No LTE but you'd still get the benefit of native Verizon coverage.

On an unrelated note, looks like the google voice/voip apps like GrooveIP won't work after next May. Maybe they'll have it integrated in Hangouts by then.

"An update on Google Voice

We are rolling out a new version of the Google+ Hangouts app ( goo.gl/XkHn03 ) for Android, which includes support for SMS and MMS messages. While this is a great step forward, we still have a lot of work to do, specifically around Google Voice:

- Unfortunately, today’s update does not work with Google Voice numbers unless you’ve enabled Google Voice on your Sprint phone. But rest assured, we’re working to support SMS messages for all Google Voice phone numbers by early next year. And don’t worry, your Voice number will go unchanged.

- We hear you loud and clear: you want Google Voice phone numbers outside the US and to support MMS. We are listening and working hard to make this happen, but we need to work with carriers and this can take some time.

- Finally, we want to make Google Voice as secure as possible. There are a few third-party applications that provide calling and SMS services by making unauthorized use of Google Voice. These apps violate our Terms of Service and pose a threat to your security, so we’re notifying these app developers that they must stop making unauthorized use of Google Voice to run their services and transition users by May 15, 2014.

We know that communicating with your friends and family should be easy and that you want one app that can do it all. We’re working hard to deliver that experience for everyone. It will take some time before Google Voice is fully integrated into Hangouts, and we appreciate your patience along the way."

I disabled the SMS in hangouts. It was a pretty shitty implementation. It was not like imessage/sms where it's a threaded conversation.

if they're shipping via UPS and you have a UPS My Choice account (which is free), you might be able to do a signature waiver

i've had a couple of laptops delivered to the house recently and they've all required a signature...but when you sign in, you can waive the requirement (only on the day of delivery, though...i think)

i'm sure the sender can REALLY require that you sign for it, though...and if they're shipping using FedEx, it could be that the waiver isn't an option

so, anything I need to do in preparation for porting my # and service from Verizon to ST? I have a Nexus 5 arriving and an un-activated AT&T ST sim. (Still need to get a cutter to cut it from micro to nano this week).

Currently I am part of an old family-plan with my parents and sister that we all share. They all have old-school simple feature phones or whatever and I am the only one with a smartphone or any data on that plan. Will it be an issue for me to activate my phone and port my number since mine is part of another plan, of which I am not the plan administrator?

I'm trying to decide if I just wanna keep my old phone, and get a new number on this AT&T SIM for a little while just to try out the service. Seems like that luxury will cost me $48 more (1 month of service + another SIM)...not sure it's worth it. May just jump in feet first and do the port.

i paid for a month of st service before making the full switch over. i figured it would be good just to make sure i have service everywhere i need it before canceling verizon. i dont think $48 is much, just to make sure. i would hate to not have service at home/work and already canceled.

you might want to check on if you can change the number on a sim that you already have activated. i dont think you can. so if you want to try you wont be able to port your number later. i decided to just start over and not port.

^^^,^^^^correct. Thanks I was just looking that up myself and it is indeed a micro. Seemed like the leaked info pointed to it being a nano and I forgot to check the final specs.

^ and that's not a bad idea but I'm hoping I'll have no issues with an AT&T sim based on what my neighbors and co-workers have said about AT&T in the area. Also, this is the only phone # I have ever had for myself so I'm definitely not wanting to lose it.

That's a good point...but it would just suck to pay the $50, then after a day or two decide everything is good, and want to port my number and potentially have to pay another $50.

I could just go ahead and port it, and if it sucks just go directly to AT&T and start up a new plan, so I wouldn't be out of service too long...

I don't know if I can do a trade in with a phone on AT&T if I'm still under contract. At this point I'd be best just unlocking it myself, selling it on CL or ebay, then buying the Note III off contract.

My wife and I were up able to renew our contracts so we each did the new AT&T plan where we didn't come out of pocket to buy the phones up front, but pay monthly for 12 months and then turn the phones in and get to upgrade to new ones. We went expecting to pay hundreds of dollars and spent less than $100 out of pocket. The monthly for her Galaxy S4 is 25 bucks and mine is 35- total our monthly bill increased less than $50 though because we went to a plan with less minutes as we were sharing 1400/month and actually using less than 700 a month. We lost 11000 rollover minutes but oh well... They also gave us a free Note 3 tablet if we signed up for the data plan ($15/month) for two years.

Can anyone think of good breakage/loss warranty companies for the N5 outside of Squaretrade?

They're $8 a month, with a $99 replacement fee...which isn't bad, but it doesn't cover lost or stolen phones. Will any 3rd party companies cover those?

anyone have their number ported to google and have nothing but trouble with it on their phone?

i ported mine (paying $20 for the privilege) almost 2 months ago when i switched to straight talk, thinking it made sense...but it's been a PITA ever since

first, it took 3-4 days for the initial change to go through (ie. google had my number, but when i'd call or text from it, everyone told me it came up as a random 504 number until 3-4 days after the change)

that was annoying, but somewhat understandable...what's NOT understandable is why google voice (the app) keeps resetting to make itself the the default SMS/MMS app and then NEVER notifying me that i've received text messages...i'll just realize i haven't gotten anything in a while and check the settings, and sure enough, it decided to take over again

then there's hangouts...what a shitastic app...i have 4 google accounts tied to my phone and it absolutely cannot stand letting me associate my ST phone number (the one provided by ST that's tied to the phone itself) with the same google account that my "real" phone number is tied to...so until i uninstalled it, i couldn't open the app without it asking me to verify my ST number with a second account...this would cause my GV forwarding to get fucked up, and for 24-48 hours, i'd "lose" my number (see above, it would send my texts and calls from a completely unrelated number)

i realize i'm ranting here...i'm just wondering if it's me, my phone (nexus 4), the ROM (pac-man 4.3) or something else

[/rant]

I bought the Droid Maxx on Amazon wireless early Sept, shipped mid Sept, and they have price matched twice since I bought it down to $100 (+ the bogus $30 that VZ now charges to upgrade). I'm guessing it's unusual to be able to get the latest Droid for a hundred bucks 75 days after launch?

The numbers I listed are from Squaretrade

From what I can tell top insure your phone with Asurion you have to go through your carrier...and they don't have StraightTalk listed there.
