"N.C. State receiver suggests the "rivalry" may be over for UNC-State

State's Jarvis Williams talks upcoming season and UNC on 99.9

By Tim Hall

There is when you know there is something special about a college rivalry. The game is three months away, but mention UNC and an N.C. State player will have a little something to say.

Wide receiver Jarvis Williams did when he joined me on 99.9 The Fan ESPN Radio on Wednesday evening.

When asked if there was one game on the schedule he wanted to win the most, he chose Central Florida. (Williams is from Orlando.)

After I commended him for not going with the status quo answer of North Carolina (about 7:00 into the interview), he didn't let the door close.

"You know, I'm getting the hang of beating UNC. We're trying to take it out of being called a rival," Williams said. "We get them this year, that'll be four in a row. That there says it's not a rival game anymore. We're trying to dominate every time."

Game on. This year's is Nov. 20 in Chapel Hill.

But in all honesty is a comment like this surprising? N.C. State players talk about Carolina and Carolina players talk about State. And usually, when it's not game week, it's all in good fun, like it was in this interview. The Heels shouldn't need a comment to get them primed to play the Wolfpack.

Williams led the Wolfpack with 11 touchdown catches in 2009. That tied him with Torry Holt as the third most ever caught in one season. So since 11 has already been done, the bar has to be set higher.

"If I give you guys 11 touchdowns this year, that's not acceptable in my eyes," Williams said. "I gotta do 12 or more, aiming for 15 plus, just get out there and make plays – as many as I can."

N.C. State's top four returning pass catchers hauled in 2,114 yards and 24 touchdowns in 2009.

GG, Williams

I read in an article that our receiving core is one of "the most accomplished in the nation."

Now, I recall seeing a LOT of dropped passes last season, so is there any credence to that statement? I know Brian (our tight end) is fantastic, but is our whole core top of the nation material?

Every time I hear stuff like that my superstitious side takes over. How about a dose of humility, because pride usually precedes a fall.

It's really nice that we've got three in a row, especially considering how much we've sucked lately, but UNC still has 30+ more wins overall. So the football team's job is to win the next 40 or so head-to-heads.

Owen Spencer led the nation in yards per catch at 25.5 last year

Jarvis Williams tied for 9th in the country with 11 TD catches

Our receiving corps is ridiculously deep. Not the most talented, but I don't know if there's a better combination of talent and experience in the country. Spencer's YPC last year broke his own ACC record, too.

I hate it when people bring up the overall head to head records. I read something a while ago that it is so one sided because State didn't bother with football at all until Case died and that was why it took them so long to build Carter-Finley and why Riddick was so run down for so long.

I just hope that not only can we beat UNC again this year, but that our defense can improve just a little bit so that we don't waste our offense again this year. Beating UNC again and having another terrible season isn't something the team should be happy about.

^but lets not make lame excuses about the head to head record. It might take until we're retirees, but we should take that head to head lead. Have we ever had the lead? Anyone want to go back in history and figure out when? I'm guessing football will be easier to take back than basketball... but someone feel free to correct me.

7-5 is my HOPE for the team's accomplishment this year. maybe we win a bowl game after that?

UNC's lead consists of tons of wins from back in the leather helmet days. The series is basically dead even since the ACC was created. If Wolfpack fans are living in the past bringing up the 70s and 80s in basketball, then the Holes are REALLY stretching when they mention their football series lead. I basically pay it no mind.

From the beginning until 1955, the series record was 5-34-6. From then on, it's 25-30.

The ACC series record is 25-32, so that's certainly within reach within the next few decades.

Are you kidding?? You know they are ahead by 33 games?? If we're lucky, our kids will see us overtake the lead by the time they retire. We've still only won 50% of the last 20 games, and we've only won 11 out of the last 30. What makes you think we're going to win 80% of the games from here on out when their program looks to be on the upswing and our is mired in mediocrity?

Our fans are so fucking delusional.

UNC is only up 6 or 7 games since the ACC started. Most of their huge lead is back before the '50s. Still though, I don't care too much about overall head to head. I just want to win against them this year and not have another losing season.

We are 30-55-4 against UNC.

So it would take us winning the next 25 years to even the series. Without one loss.

Since the time we were in the Southern Conference together (1921):

29-54-2

Since the time we've been in the ACC (1953):

25-32

So prior to 1953, we won a total of 5 games against UNC and lost 23.

That's actually the only hope we have of catching them before any of us die.

An SMU or Marshall like catastrophe. SMU would be better, because I don't want anyone to die.

brick, with advances in medical technology I could live to be 100. If we went 2:1 wins/losses against UNC in the next 70-75 years, we could see it happen. Obviously that w/l ratio hasn't happened historically, but maybe the 3-peat is just the beginning? Where is the blind State hope, damnit?

I just hope we see a graduating class leave UNC without beating us, that's a good goal for now.

That site leaves out all the games in the 1800s for some reason.
We are 30-60-6 all time against UNC.

Didn't score a point until the 7th game (11-11 tie). We were shut out for 10 of the first 12 games and 20 of the first 32 games. (We also shut them out three times in that span, two 0-0 ties and one 7-0 win)
Didn't win a game until the 14th game (13-3 win). Second win was the 15th game (winning streak!!). Third win was the 21st game. Fourth and fifth wins were the 35th and 36th games.
Pre-ACC (1951-): 5-31-6
ACC (1953+): 25-32
Last 10: 6-4
Last 20: 9-11 (Damn you, O'Cain!)
Last 30: 12-18 (Damn you, early 80s coach!)
Last 40: 16-24
Last 50: 22-28

Three game winning streak is tied for the second best winning streak with 1956-58 and 1967-69. Five game winning streak 1988-92.

I always figured UNC was so far ahead because during the wars where they drafted people we were left with a skeleton crew while they wouldn't allow the UNC players to join the military for some reason. Bill Clinton made some strides to prevent this from being an issue in the future.

It seems like a lot of you are making cowardly predictions because you know our defense will suck. 7-5 with the talent we have would be a catastrophe.

Well a quarterback can't have great stats without the wrs having great stats too. So a great qb will make wrs look good and a great wr corp will make the qb look good.

We have a great qb.

You hear that excuse a lot, but it's a bit of a red herring there.

WWI - US involvement 1917-1918. NCSU (or whatever we were back then) didn't play UNC from 1905 to 1918. We lost in 1919 (12-13) and then won in 1920 (13-3) and 1921 (7-0) when we should have still been experiencing fallout if our team had been decimated by the war.

WWII - US involvement 1941-1945. NCSU won in 1941 (13-7) and 1942 (21-14) and lost in 1943 (13-27). We didn't play again until 1947 (where we then proceeded to lose 9 in a row).
Those two wins during the war were actually the only two wins between 1928 and 1955 (24 games - 2 wins, 2 ties, 20 losses).

Korean War - US involvement 1950-1953. NCSU lost all 3 games (7-13, 0-21, 7-29), didn't play UNC in 1952. Lost two more in 54 and 55, bounced back in 56 to win 3 in a row.

Vietnam War - The dates are confusing on this one. Since I ignored your clarification about the draft for three previous wars, I'm going to starting paying attention to it here. Draft was ended in 1973. When did we start ramping up in Vietnam? 1960? 1964? Beats the hell out of me. Anyway, our record vs UNC was 7-7 from 1960-1973. However you want to break down the Vietnam War, our record during that time will be pretty even.
60 W, 61 L, 62 W, 63 L, 64 W, 65 L, 66 L, 67 W, 68 W, 69 W, 70 L, 71 L, 72 L, 73 W, 74 L, 75 W

This statement is true for me too. I am one of the least optimistic fans of NC State. Yeah occasionally we do great things and win games we shouldn't, but normally it is just NC State shit year after year.

As for all of this nonsense that we'll ever catch UNC in either football or basketball in terms of H2H records, I just shake my head. We'd need our program to do a UF under Spurrier type turnaround to be able to win 10+ in a row versus the holes.

the history is interesting... and helps fill the void and keep the thread on top until we get some more interesting recent news fodder to discuss.

i'm always expecting us to pull some NCSS and fall on our faces.... my motto has always been:

HIGH Hopes, LOW Expectations.

the high hope is for 7-5 this year. Anything above that and we have a freaking parade.

Why is a program worth watching if they keep a coach who can't win scoring 30 ppg?
Why is our defense comprised of juco scrubs instead of acc scrubs? Thats reason to be angry. If we have a bad defense, we'll be a good team. We had no defense.

I'm not going to bother responding to your post other than the fact that O'Brien was interviewed YESTERDAY about about T.J. Well one reason why NCSU football sucked for half of the 1900s was b/c we weren't a scholarship program until sometime in the Earle Edwards era. He's considered one of the greatest coaches in school history despite the fact that he has an overall losing record, which is due to again the fact that he came to State when weren't a scholarship program. This is quite different from the football powers who had had a long standing tradition of offering athletic scholarships for football.
