So this whole Rush Limbaugh mess has brought to my attention the blatant double standard of the so called media. Why is it when a conservative commentator makes some dumb and misogynistic remarks about a liberal woman there is a huge media shit storm, yet when liberal commentators do the same things its brushed off as humor or not a big deal. I mean seriously, how much shit have people like Letterman, John Stewart and Bill Maher talked about conservative women like Palin, Michelle Malkin, Andrea Tanteros, Dana Perino et al. I also think Bill Maher calling Palin a cunt, or attacking her kids, is just as bad, if not worse, than Limbaugh calling a liberal law student a slut.

Everyone turn off your partisan goggles a moment and realize that both sides say dumb and offensive things about women, but the backlash only goes one way. Conservative women are fair game for misogynistic speech.

Not that I have the slightest idea why it really happens, but maybe it has something to do with the liberals you mentioned being actual comedians and aren't considered serious commentators while conservatives tend to take Limbaugh's comments as gospel.

Of course it could be because the liberals are geniuses and have taken control of mainstream culture to brainwash you: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2GCcVtpWVQc

The comedian thing is a cop out. Just because Maher and Stewart call themselves comedians doesnt give them a shield against what they say. Plenty of liberals take anything those two say as pure liberal gospel, just like the right with Rush.

And not to get side tracked because I really dont give a shit about the issue, but no one is arguing against birth control they are only against having to subsidize it for other people.

Im not defending any ones remarks, but I defend their right to say it. All I am saying is that the backlash for stupidity should go both ways if we are honest and objective, which few on TWW are mature enough to be.

And you become a public figure when you testify before congress and become a poster child, so dont use that excuse.

I also guess its also cool to gloat about someones death simply because you disagreed with them...Andrew Breitbart

Who's saying he doesn't have the right to say it?

People expect Rush to say dumb things, I don't recall anyone here saying he should be arrested for it. It's just desserts in this case that his advertisers are pulling their funding.

You have yet to point out a double standard... you admit Rush said something dumb as is facing the consequences (for once), but who else has said something dumb without consequence?

there is.

Bill Maher gets blasted from the right all the time. Rush Limbaugh gets blasted from the left all the time. Neither one of them gets thrown in jail.

Sometimes what they say gets them fired when their advertisers withdraw funding (Bill Maher was fired from ABC, if I remember correctly). And now Limbaugh is raising eyebrows because his sponsors are finally leaving him for being a fat, pill-popping cock sucker.

I'm not really sure what the big deal is.

It seems pretty common among conservatives to believe there is a double standard.

There is someone on my FB who swears Bush was treated way worse than Obama by the media/commentators. It's sadly delusional really.

What remarks are you referring to? Simply saying a mean thing about a woman does not = misogyny. Calling a woman a slut and a prostitute because she uses birth control is some pretty blatant pre-20th century woman-hating.

Not seeing the double standard. Anyone that calls a woman a slut/prostitute over the air is going to create a shit storm, liberal or conservative. American conservatives tend to engage in the practice of slut shaming already, whereas liberals are less likely to do so.

So... let me get this straight. You have literally gone from preaching against the government taking away first amendment rights to society creating a backlash against a [fucking ignorant dumbass] shock jock within the realm of the free market and no government interference. Isn't this how the free speech is supposed to work? How can you possibly defend this ridiculous double standard corner that YOU have backed yourself into? How can we take you seriously at all after this?

Rush has far more influence than any one liberal media figure. He is the goddamn de facto leader of this sham of a Republican Party. His word is literally policy in many areas of the country. He fired off harsh, personal attacks on a young female civilian who was requested by Congress to testify on an issue. She was not a public official. If she sued Rush Limbaugh for slander she would actually have a pretty strong case. There is no double standard. He went too far and now he's suffering the consequences which is something that hasn't happened to him before to this extent.

^ Thank God. I really like where your policy positions originate from even though you apply them in totally different ways than I do.

i gotta hand it to the ultra liberal freaks running this country... they've done well pretending they are the party of 'defending groups' and 'oppressed' peoples.

(we all know they don't give a shit and they end up raising taxes and taking away liberties and fucking up jobs and energy every time but that's another point)

but well played. well played indeed. your 'control' of the young/minority/immigrants is slipping out from your fingertips and only the media is holding it together and playing damage control

we all know where it ends up. people always choose independence and freedom over 'pretend' welfare and money to keep them happy. it's only a matter of time.

Who is they? Some random people on the street during a protest? I don't see any big name "liberal media" types burning effigies.

Freedom of speech is exactly that, but when you make offensive comments on a show that anyone can listen to, you're going to get called out for it. Was Sandra Fluke advocating policies that I think are fundamentally flawed? Yes. Most people in Washington D.C. are.

Personally, I think apologies are pretty worthless. Apologies don't make me feel better, and I don't "demand" them. Fluke is right, this apology doesn't change anything. Rush does not feel bad. He spoke his mind and he was going to lose money if he didn't apologize.

I think one of the biggest differences here is that this woman was not a public figure, unlike Palin, Bachmann, etc. (And BTW, when did anyone talk shit about Perino? I think she's a swell looker.)

There are other differences as well, but that stands out for me.

Don't be ignorant. If you're watching only conservative news, you're only getting a one sided view of politics. Hence why you admit to ignorance in this quote: "yet when liberal commentators do the same things its brushed off as humor or not a big deal"

If you're watching conservative media, the conservatives are always "attacked" by the liberals.
If you're watching liberal media, the liberals are always "attacked" by the conservatives.
If you're watching libertarian media, the libertarians are always "attacked" by the liberals and conservatives.

It's all drama.

Unless you watch all of the medias together unbiasedly to get a crossover on facts (the facts that both sides agree upon), disregard any frivolous and useless information (he said/she said bullshit) , and stick to the facts, you'll be a much happier person.

You think the constitution was written by people who gave in when times got tough,
written by people with no hope or dreams, or written by people who gave a fuck about all the negative people who said it would never work?

They wrote one of the most amazing works in the history - the first constitutional which strives for liberty and justice for every individual.

So stop feeling depressed. Use the information you learn for good. Start standing up for what you believe in while realizing you have to keep listening to ensure you are still right. Don't be in denial when you are wrong. Don't feel stupid if you are wrong unless you foolishly didn't pursue the truth and reason each and everyday.

Never stop asking questions.

Point 1: Even by the rough standards of cable/talk radio/digital talk, Limbaugh's verbal abuse of Sandra Fluke set a new kind of low. I can't recall anything as brutal, ugly and deliberate ever being said by such a prominent person and so emphatically repeated. This was not a case of a bad "word choice." It was a brutally sexualized accusation, against a specific person, prolonged over three days.

Point 2: The cases that conservatives cite as somehow equivalent to Limbaugh's tirade against Fluke by and large did bring consequences for their authors.

After David Letterman for example made an ugly joke about Sarah Palin's daughter, he delivered an abject seven-minute apology on air. (To which Palin responded by refusing the apology and insinuating that David Letterman was a child molester.)

When liberal talker Ed Schultz nastily called my dear friend Laura Ingraham a "slut" on his radio show, MSNBC responded by suspending Schultz for a week without pay from his TV show. Schultz likewise apologized in person on air. (Ingraham accepted the apology with grace and humor.)

The exception to the general rule is Bill Maher, who never apologized for calling Palin by a demeaning sexual epithet. But now see point 3:

Point 3: Limbaugh's place in American public life is in no way comparable to that of David Letterman, Bill Maher or Ed Schultz.

Letterman is not a political figure at all; and while Maher and Schultz strongly identify as liberals, neither qualifies as anything like a powerbroker in the Democratic Party. I'm sure the Barack Obama re-election effort is happy to have Maher's million-dollar gift, but I sincerely doubt there is a Democratic congressman who worries much whether Maher criticizes him. A word of criticism from Limbaugh, by contrast, will reduce almost any member of the Republican caucus to abject groveling. See, for example: GINGREY, PHIL."

To me the interesting part of the story is the ever-evolving “coed”. (in quotes because in the beginning she was described as a Georgetown law student) It was then revealed that prior to attending Georgetown she was an active women’s rights advocate. In one of her first interviews she is quoted as talking about how she reviewed Georgetown’s insurance policy prior to committing to attend, and seeing that it didn’t cover contraceptive services, she decided to attend with the express purpose of battling this policy. Let me put that another way, she specifically knew the university didn’t cover it and chose to attend for precisely that reason. During this time, she was described as a 23-year-old coed. Magically, at the same time Congress is debating the forced coverage of contraception, she appears and is even brought to Capitol Hill to testify. The other day, in an interview with Matt Lauer on the Today show, it was revealed that she is 30 years old, NOT the 23 that had been reported all along.

Should Rush have apologized for calling her a slut and prostitute? Yes, because he was clearly wrong. So, he apologizes and she dismisses it so she can continue portraying herself as the victim . What should have called her is a deceitful muckraking cunt.
Is the media biased? You bet it is and because there is only one conservative tv news org the bias is heavy on the liberal side.

Now, in the grand scheme of things what does this matter? It doesn't, but it is something for simple minds to latch onto and for politicians to use as wedge issue. This a non-issue made into an issue because no one is smart enough or has the balls to talk about the most important issues; The budget, deficit reduction, foreign policy, tax policy, defense policy and economy.

Here's another recent apology:

As a recent college grad who has spent time working to improve communities and empower those without a voice, this role is not in any way representative of who I am. Sure, lets go overboard
Her ambition is misguided and misplaced. Instead of attacking an entity that doesn't provide birth control due to it's beliefs why doesn't work for or start an entity that provides BC for those that can't get it?
No, she did this only because she is interested in giving someone else a black eye. She has no interest in birth control.
