Here's my problem...I've seen/heard/read the bit from Limbaugh several times, and it seems pretty obvious to me that he wasn't calling "all women who use birth control" sluts or prostitutes. He was calling women who expect to be paid for BC to have sex names, sure, in reference to the mandate that BC be covered by insurance. That's still a dumb and shitty thing to say. But it's not the dumber and shittier thing that he's accused of saying.

"While I have your attention, give me 30 minutes here. It's all I ask and then you can do what you want. I want to explain why I apologized to Sandra Fluke in the statement that was released on Saturday. I've read all the theories from all sides, and, frankly, they are all wrong. I don't expect -- and I know you don't, either -- morality or intellectual honesty from the left. They've demonstrated over and over a willingness to say or do anything to advance their agenda. It's what they do. It's what we fight against here every day. But this is the mistake I made. In fighting them on this issue last week, I became like them. "

Reminder that nothing will solidly divorce conservatives from Rush, because that would mean implying that liberals are right about something. Rush could literally advocate virginity tests for all women and executing those who fail, and conservatives would fall right in line because their ideology has been reduced to "Anything opposite what the liberal says." See GrumpyGOP trying to weasel Rush's words for him. The apology by Rush epitomizes it, there is a sense that no concession or apology can be made without an exhaustive list of caveats about LIBRULZ.

edit, woops, someone beat me to this: http://www.washingtonpost.com/blogs/plum-line/post/the-morning-plum-axelrod-tattoos-romney-with-rush-slut-comment/2012/03/06/gIQAfMobuR_blog.html

Quote :
"The interesting dynamic here is that it’s become harder and harder for Republicans to fully repudiate Rush, simply because Dems and liberals are pressuring them to do so. No matter how reprehensible Rush’s comments, Republicans who decisively distance themselves from Rush will in effect be surrendering to the liberal media, which in the right wing mythology is doing Obama’s bidding by devoting so much attention to the controversy.

That’s why Rush continues to blame liberals for his own outbursts, in order to keep his supporters in his camp. Of course, Rush’s continuing bluster is only causing both sides to dig in harder, making this still worse for the GOP."

Now I'm really confused, this must be opposite day. Usually I find GrumpyGOP the more reasonable, and normally I'd expect you (GeniusxBoy) to use this as a springboard to a new argument. What's next? Is pack_bryan going to limit his effort today to a single thread wherein he carefully researches and composes a substantial and thought-provoking post?

I've never listened to Rush's show a day in my life and I think he is a bloated sack of bile and pus and hate who should be popped like a tick and incinerated. With regards to the whole "contraceptives issue" I've been opposed to the conservative position in every detail except, as a purely academic exercise, to wonder about the legal authority to mandate coverage for BC by insurance companies. I don't even agree with Republicans about the "freedom of conscience" issue and would gladly force religious institutions to pay for rubbers and pills.

All of that said, I don't think it's unreasonable to say that there is a real and meaningful difference between these two statements:

1) "All women who use birth control are prostitutes."
2) "All women who expect to be paid to facilitate sexual activity are prostitutes."

For all I know the man would impose sharia law tomorrow and inspect every hymen in the country to make sure they're intact and execute anybody who bought BC pills as a harlot, but based on the parts quoted by his opponents in the news and online, Limbaugh's position was against forcing others to PAY for birth control, not birth control itself.

And, lest we forget, I THINK HE'S WRONG ANYWAY.

So let's hate the man. Let's revile him and ask his sponsors to drop him. I will sign the petition. But let's do it for something he actually said. God knows the man has said enough offensive things we don't have to start making up new ones.

not to argue over the semantics too much here as it's almost irrelevant, but the impression I got from his first response was that because the girl was using so much birth control that made her a slut

""What does it say about the college co-ed Fluke, who goes before a congressional committee and essentially says she must be paid to have sex?" Limbaugh asked on his show last Wednesday. "What does that make her? It makes her a slut, right? It makes her a prostitute. She wants to be paid to have sex. She's having so much sex, she can't afford the contraception. She wants you and me and the taxpayers to pay her to have sex.""

From that it looks to me to be pretty plain that "slut" and "prostitute" both derive from "paid to have sex."

That one "She's having so much sex..." statement, aside from demonstrating a complete lack of understanding about how most female birth control works, is bad. But no direct connection is drawn from "using so much birth control" = "prostitute."

OK I can see that...but I also wouldn't argue with someone taking away that he is calling anyone that has as much sex as she does a slut. Does he say that specifically? No, not exactly. But he is saying the phrase, "She's having so much sex..." with the negative connotation, as if she is having too much, thus, making her a slut.

how is subsidizing birth control for some a public good....its not. In theory, taxes should only be spent on things that provide a public good, ie it benefits all citizens equally.

Fewer unwanted pregnancies = fewer unwanted kids

Fewer unwanted kids = fewer people on other social programs and/or fewer criminals later in life

Fewer criminals = less crime

Social advantages all around

Look, if we allow abortions, or help people get contraception, we'll wind up with fewer criminals that the state can kill later in life. What self respecting republican would want that?

ideally i'd rather the govt control birth period. make it a punishable by death crime for a woman to give birth without an appication

hell, just put all births in govt labs. aren't we close to being able to do that? then we'll finally be able to put a lid on population control

just go to birth.gov and order up a kid if you can prove you can take care of one.

sterilize all women while you're at it. no need for birth control.

just make all matters a birth of human beings a state matter.

also^ SOMEWHAT of a troll post.

once we are able to create a unique human conscious (or brain?) like a piece of software it doesn't matter what kind of body you have.

we could all live in fucking robots. or in a fucking ipad.

as long is it can process our memories and thoughts/impulses from our unique 'software' or genetic code...

human bodies are just cool things that can multiply in a neat way.

we're getting close to immortality guys. this whole birth control issue is leading up to the greater issue of WHAT IS LIFE and HOW DO WE CONTROL IT

think about it..

well... some fuck would breed a mindless zombie army or something and screw up the universe for the rest of us.

oh well.

In the long run, perhaps. The American Revolution certainly collapsed the economy of the day. But I would never accept the death and destruction was worth it.
