I'm going to keep doing what I do, and when and if a cop says something to me, I'll consider alternatives. If most drivers weren't such oblivious assholes, perhaps I would have a practical chance of obeying the supposed laws in place. I take the safer route, and that's the way it is.

What are you talking about when you say, "darting in and out of traffic in your lane"? You don't even understand the concepts I'm addressing. No one is talking about weaving in and out of cars. I'm talking about riding on the right side of the road where bikes are supposed to ride. This is very basic stuff. I'm not the type of person that would sue someone. Even if they smashed my bike and were found wholly responsible, I'd take ~$70 for a new bike and that would be that. I don't grasp your frivilous lawsuit mentality.

And apparently, I'm starting to hijack my own thread. . .

its dangeroud to pass on the curb. im not saying dont pass cars, just dont do it when it is illegal and unsafe. if you want to ride on the road you have to follow the rules, that means no cutting through traffic on the right.
a car in the right lane is not going to look to see if there is a bike coming up on their right, it just isnt going to happen. its not because they arent being observant its because there isnt a reason to check. ive almost clipped many bikers who decide to fly past me on the right. if i do hit one they will be paying for the damage to my car

Actually, you will be paying for the damages to your car. The right is where they are supposed to ride. It is your job to watch out for them, and not weave or change lanes without looking.

Passing on the right is against the law except in areas where it is specifically permitted. Passing on the right places your vehicle on the blind side of the car you are passing. The car you are passing could unexpectedly make a right turn or pull over to the right side of the road. Exceptions where passing on the right is allowed:

* on highways having at least two lanes traveling in each direction;

* on one-way streets where all lanes of traffic move in the same direction;

* when passing a vehicle that is in the left-turn lane; and/or

* when driving in a lane set aside for right turns. "

and even those exeptions arent talking about passing on the curb in the same lane

What defines "sufficient width"? I am not trying to be a smartass here, but I am truly ignorant of the law. I really have trouble justifying waiting in line behind an idling car and sucking exhaust fumes when there is plenty of room for passage on the right side. This is a college campus, not downtown in an urban center. I wish more thought was given to bikes when planning. This seems to be a constant struggle, and having only recently joined the ranks of cyclists, I now empathize with their gripes.

IGNORANCE IS NO EXCUSE. ( )

Maybe pass them at your own risk.... I know I wouldn't come up really quickly beside a car stopping on a busy street near campus. That generally means they're dropping someone off or parking. Either way people will be getting out of the car.

i think the second link goes into more depth

and yeah i wouldnt wait either, but doing so really negates your right to complain about someone almost opening their door into your bike

I knows! That's why I asked. Now, even knowing the law, I may chose not to follow it, but at least it will be intentional.

^Point taken. It was made worse by the fact that my bike is a piece of crap from Wal-Mart and the brakes might as well have been made out of pencil erasers. They lost effectiveness within a week of purchase. This has since been fixed, and I now watch closely for dropoffs in that area.
