christmas was originally a Pagan tradition before christians stole it for themselves. it's not like Christ was actually born in December.

you can't have your holiday invade everything without some things invading your holiday.

We need to change the name of Christmas to Freedomas. Cause it shows that America is a free country and we all know Christmas was invented for Americans.

"Christmas in America is an exuberant display of human ingenuity, capitalist productivity, and the enjoyment of life. Yet all of these are castigated as "materialistic"; the real meaning of the holiday, we are told, is assorted Nativity tales and altruist injunctions (e.g., love thy neighbor) that no one takes seriously.

Life requires reason, selfishness, capitalism; that is what Christmas should celebrate--and really, underneath all the pretense, that is what it does celebrate. It is time to take the Christ out of Christmas, and turn the holiday into a guiltlessly egoistic, pro-reason, this-worldly, commercial celebration."

I'm sure it's been repeated to death already, but decorated pine trees, playing in the snow, exchanging gifts, and guys who wear a red coat and have a thyroid problem have dick-all to do with Jesus.

But I suppose most atheists celebrate Christmas because it's simply become a large part of our culture. We do it not so much for Christ so much as it's become a tradition, become ingrained into our society to have this celebration. I suspect that only the most hardcore of atheists (who, in a stunning coincidence, also tend to be the loudest and most obnoxious of all atheists) even find the holiday offensive, the rest of us just like having an excuse to get out of doing work and to go see our families.

^ I agree.........

and I don't know, I guess maybe it does seem like this big holiday that's all about gift giving to some, but when I think about Christmas the first thing that comes to mind is going to midnight mass with my family, spending time with them, and celebrating the birth of Jesus.. I don't think about how many gifts I have under the tree (now at least, at 7 years old that's a whole different story :beatup

Anyways, carry on

^Are you trying to bait someone into calling you an a-atheist (subscriber to the belief in aatheistism)? Because if so, I'm all over that shit.

look, really. atheists don't exist.

you all know it's true. intuitively.

atheism is just an imaginary construct used by some people to make them feel more confident about things they don't understand.

I don't know whether Atheists exist. I do know that the idea of atheists exist. Just as the idea of Skack exists. Is said idea a reality or is it nothing more than an idea? I don't know, but knowing that said idea exists allows me to know that an entity exists which conjures or observes such a reality. Am I that entity, or am I an idea conjured by that entity? Is it even possible to know? I think I may ask Santa Claus to provide me with clarity for Christmas. As for my parents, I'm asking them for one of those little iPods; provided I don't buy one first.

I'm not an atheist, but I don't care for organized religion.

That said, I celebrate Christmas because my work gives me days off and I can hang out with Grandma and get tipsy.

Christmas isn't about religion for me, it's about being with the people I care about and showing them that I care about them.
