why? is it for the presents?
to me that makes as much sense as osama bin laden celebrating "Independence day" for the fireworks.

christmas has always been a celebration of the birth of jesus.
if you dont like but still want to celebrate, no fear, you still have thanksgiving and new years.

happy holidays

"In fact, Christmas as we celebrate it today is a 19th-century American invention. The freedom and prosperity of post-Civil War America created the happiest nation in history. The result was the desire to celebrate, to revel in the goods and pleasures of life on earth. "

I like celebrating how great it is to take pleasure in this life on earth.

Holidays, like everything else, evolve over time. Look at Halloween. Used to be about some other shit. Now it's about girls getting to dress slutty. Changed for the better in my opinion.

Christmas used to be a holy Christian holiday. Now it's what drives 4th quarter business.

for a couple hundred years before Jesus was born to the prostitute Mary, December 25 -- the date of the Winter Solstice on the Julian Calendar -- Romans celebrated the birth of Mithras who had been the offspring of a Roman deity and a virgin human female.

Anyhow LAFTA, how about you take your Jesus' advice and go be pious in secret instead of publicly beating yourself like the Pharisees

I know. I'm not a Christian. I think you can be an atheist and celebrate Christmas in your own way.

Cause Christmas fucking rocks.

There's drinking, gluttony, presents, family, friends coming back to town, long walks to smoke when you get sick of family and friends...

Parties, Santa, Christmas-crazed kids, egg nog, no work, no school, "cheer," holiday-themed TV, tasty treats, lights/decorations, good movies come out, the smell of evergreen, indiscriminate liplocks neath the toe...

And this man Jesus that some folks are all into sounds like a pretty cool dude...so, fuck yeah, I'm down to celebrate...

I'm an atheist and I halfheartedly celebrate it because it's always pushed upon me by family and friends.

I could give two shits.

It's not so bad to give gifts to people you appreciate and if somebody likes you, getting gifts is good too. it's a convenient time to get everybody something and then not worry about them til their birthday.

im officially agnostic (might as well be atheist), and i love Christmas because i get to spend relaxing time with family enjoying their presence.

christmas is a commercial secular holiday anyhow. consider this fact. maybe you recall it:

last year, Christmas fell on a Sunday... a LOT of churches across the country CANCELLED their sunday morning services because it would be way too inconvenient for families who were visiting each other from out of town.

I mean, really? who the fuck wants to go to CHURCH on Christmas morning??

not when theres family to catch up with, presents to give, food to eat, drinks to drink, sports to watch, kids to play with, naps to take...

christmas has a lot of pagan origins. some of it is based on saturnalia, the roman holiday where there was basically a week long party full of lawlessness and debauchery. men gave each other gifts and decorated trees if i remember correctly. there were also human sacrifices and gay sex. christmas is most certainly not about jesus' birthday. there's no way he was even born in december given the account of his birth in the bible. atheists celebrate christmas because it's a commercial holiday that everyone else takes part in. you really think when christmas ads show up on tv right after thanksgiving that it's because people are so fuckin amped about jesus being born? hell no. it's to get you in the mood to buy shit for other people.

well to be fair, the word Christmas, like Michaelmas and other related words, means the feast day (usually day of birth or death) of certain Christian saints/figures - so Christmas would be the feast day of Christ so "Christmas" has always celebrated the birth of Christ.

Look, I'm wiccan, and even I recognize that you can't get the hell away from Christmas. You just can't. But it's not about Jesus any more. It's still about doing nice things for other people, which I approve of, but it's too comercialized to be about anything religious. Even me and my other pagan friends hold off and combine our Yule celebration with New Years so that it's actually the turning over of the new year. (Plus, it makes for a more bad-ass shin-dig.)
Holidays aren't as set in stone as we'd like to think they are.

if jesus gave us the biggest gift of all by dying and all that, and tis better to give than to receive, then why the fuck would jesus care if you sat in church all day on his birthday YO

its just a symbolic gesture and to unite the community.... lest you forget the church is for the gathering of the community.

Im not really fond of any type of religion, although I do believe in god and jesus. I just feel that churches and the people who attend them are not what God wants us to do. I see these big expensive churches and I cant help but think about the money that could have been saved to help people who actually need it.

Also, im quite disgusted with the people who claim to be religous and lead a double life. Although not every member of the church is like this, ive known one too many individuals to lead a completely different lifestyle than what is expected.

I do admire some sects of the church that actually do help those who need it.

"why do [atheists] celebrate christmas?"

why shouldn't they?

trick-or-treating doesn't mean that you believe in ghosts

so why should stocking stuffing mean that believe in immaculate conception?

Quote :
"why not creat a new holiday then,

the pen is mightier than the sword, iow, you'll likely never get "them" to stop calling it christmas

but, as I said, that's what christians deserve for having stolen the holiday from pagans in the first place

lafta, if you want a non-commercial, non-santa, non-tree, non-stockings, 100% baby jesus holiday

then maybe you (all) should be the one(s) to create a new holiday, just for yourselves

'cause guess what?

you ain't ever getting christmas back

it ours now

get over it

Haha, I like the implication that if the holiday is somehow secularized, that somehow damages the meaning for lafta personally. The great atheist conspiracy is glad to know your faith is that weak- it's an encouraging sign. They just love to see people threatened by them using words in ways you disprove of.
