No, but it's another one of those things Christians like to ignore about people in their religion. I also didn't make the comment about you flying off the handle. But if you want to lump me into the category of someone who obviously doesn't know anything about Christianity, despite being raised as one, well, you're absolutely making the wrong assumptions to begin with.

Quote :
"not at all...rather, i think it's a good idea to allow people to celebrate different traditions/religions without intentionally creating division within a community"

Which basically translates into a cunning insertion of Christian ideals into what they had before. I'm sure they had a choice, but as Christianity became more popular and their traditions remained mostly the same, I'm sure at least some of them just made the switch without thinking about it.

Quote :
"you're celebrating "give everyone presents in the name of commercialism" day"

Ironically, most Christians celebrate that one too. On the same day and everything.

the insertion is voluntary, babe...if you don't believe in it, don't practice it...why are you getting so pissy about someone celebrating something different? you're pissed because people did something stupid because they failed to think about it? really?

I'm not getting pissy about any of this, honestly. I just don't like it when Christians pretend they don't have this specific history of Christmas being used to cover-up a pagan holiday, that's all.

You spent half this thread trying to claim it's a completely separate issue from the pagan holiday, then you moved on to say "well if it's on the same day, SO WHAT?!"

if Christians start excluding people from Christmas then they'd have to stop making it all you see or hear everywhere you go for at least 1/6th of the year.

Also it's not as if you guys invented having a celebration in the middle of winter to cheer people up.

Christians know what they believe and know who to worship and why they are worshiping during the Christmas holiday.

"Christians" that just go to church on Christmas and Easter aren't Christians and obviously haven't read the Bible, if they aren't going to church more than twice a year.

Christians are prayerful that all the joyfullness and generousity will parlay into a conversion and finding of Jesus Christ.

If it happened to fall onto a Pagan holiday, oh well, I'm sure there was a reason for it.

Read about the plagues in Exodus, they were specifically directed at the gods and idols that the pagans worshiped.

wow, they wrote their book so their god kicks everyone else's god's asses, that must mean they're pretty awesome.

You know in his comics superman usually wins. I guess that means he couldn't be inspired by any hero in a story before him either.

anytime someone quotes, or tells you to read a verse in the bible to back up their argument, it's usually not worth your time responding to them

you know, i knew that and for some reason I responded anyway. Its like arguing with that preacher in the brickyard, once the guys mind is made up that all truth is relative to the bible, or any other one source of truth for that matter. Theres really no leverage to try to make them see other points of view.

obviously I meant any supposed source of all truth, that is not relative to anything outside of it. I just said it that way to include that once someone believes anything is the ultimate authority you can't change their mind.

probably we celebrate it because we grew up with it as a tradition. don't forget, christmas is the assimilated form of the pagan holiday which was simply to worship (give thanks and show appreciation actually) for being alive and for all the things nature gives us.

The term bible thumper refers to when they thump a bible and say something along the lines of "this the only book ya need ry hya"

they also discourage reading it very much

Who ever said that atheists are celebrating christmas? Maybe we have our own atheist holiday that happens to be in the same time period, and involves lights, trees, presents. If somebody says Merry Christmas, I'll say it back, because I'm not (too big of) a dick. I won't tell them I don't celebrate it, because I don't try to force religion (or lack of) on people like every other religion usually tries to.

I understand WHY they celebrate Christmas (family, gift giving, etc), but I wonder why they seem to pretty much only celebrate Christian major holidays.

You would think that Athiests would be just as likely to celebrate Hanukkah, Kwanzaa, or Ramadan, but it seems like they all celebrate Christmas.
