last week the BRZ got:
-twin scroll supercharger @ 7 psi
-unequal length header
-3" cross & front pipes

horsepower is up around 50%

...and gas mileage is down around 20%

One of the things that has always bugged me about my 4Runner is that the power locks would unlock, but they wouldn't lock under power. If you hit the power unlock button all the doors and the tailgate were unlocked and you had to go around and manually lock them all when you left the vehicle.

Put in a new fuse block behind the dash to fix the locks. Cost was $225 after tax, but that was a good bit below MSRP and it's worth it for me now that this truck is my DD. This one was a lot easier to get to than the AC servo I did last week. Bonus...Got a new battery for the remote that came with the truck and found that the remote locks/remote rear glass are working fine too.

research indicated a fuel control actuator to be the culprit of big red's running troubles... $130 later and of course it was not... so it's time to do some diagnosis.

yeah

runs fine till it gets to operating temperature (I assume it's relative to an open-loop/closed-loop switch over in engine management)


- could be a broken wire, another sensor, or the entire fucking injection pump

nah. TPS, MAP, vehicle speed, rail pressure and commanded rail pressure are the measured parameters, iirc. oh, and coolant temp, a/c on/off

Tips is the only thing I could see having a huge affect.

Well map would but it shouldn't change between warm and cold

None of those parameters close the loop.

Those are all inlet conditions that don't verify if calculated = actual

Tried to help a friend with an oil change.

Failed. Miserably. 2 out of the 10 bolts that are required to take off the aluminum bellpan/cross brace were stripped. Had to dremel the heads and use a washer/plier combo to screw them out.

I made sure the oil drain pan screw could be undone and fortunately that was easy. I was shocked the dealership that performed the previous oil change didn't over torque it.

The oil filter wouldn't budge. At all. I tried a universal oil filter wrench on it. Not enough room to unscrew it. So then I went out and bought an oil filter cap wrench. That ended up rounding off the little nubs on the cheap ass filter. So back to the dealership it goes. I ain't about to go in and butcher an oil filter in a relatively tight spot to death. I'm quite frustrated.

Spent about 2 hours of my time and got nothing accomplished, well aside from getting two stripped bolts out and replacing them with new hardware (as well as replacing other bolts that were missing). Car has been dealershiped all its life.

on those difficult filters, i usually just hammer a phillips screwdriver through the bottom and out the side

I have a giant pair of Chanel locks I use on filters I also squeeze until I puncture or fuck up the shape of the enough to get some serious torque on it.

Yeah. my largest chanel locks were too small, so I'd have to go back out and buy another one.

I thought about doing the screw driver through the bottom of the filter, but as I was about to my friend was insistent on just taking it back to the dealership. I was running out of time cause I had to leave for work, so it was a good excuse to call it quits. It's the first in over 10 years that I've had to spend 1.5 hours to change the oil, and didn't do anything but remove the undertray. Granted, about 40 minutes was spent going to Advanced Auto and back getting the filter cap wrench, but still. Obnoxious. I mean, how the fuck did the dealership strip the heads on 2 torx bits?! They looked like rivets they were so bad! Lol.

Took the stand up ski out for one last ride yesterday to burn most of the gas out of it. Washed, polished and winterized. Also got to light the trailer tire and yard on fire setting the bead with starter fluid.

string trimmer has been getting hard to start and the primer bulb was split. i was hoping i could make it til next season to pull it apart, but it decided not to start today, which i'm hoping will be the last time i have to mow this year. went ahead and put a new carburetor on it along with air filter, fuel filter, and spark plug. runs great now.

Worked on getting the jetski ready for winter on Friday...Lazily worked on the boat while doing other things Saturday and Sunday:
- Teak swim platform cleaned, oiled, and removed from boat.
- Hull polished.
- Oil Changed.


I'll winterize, scrub down the interior, apply vinyl protectant, put in a few bowls of water remover, and cover it up for the winter in the next weekend or two. No water pump impeller or trans fluid this year (I do those every two years) so I'm hoping it will go quickly.

It is a bad design. Looks like they use an aluminum bell pan as a cross brace for the bottom of the front bumper, act as a skid plate to protect the bottom of the engine bay, and for aerodynamics for both engine-bay heat induction (via a nasa duct) and extraction/ventilation. it pretty much covers the whole bottom portion of the 2.0L engine/transmssion, so you can't access anything without removing it. There's about 9 torx bolts of size 25 and 4 of size 30. and 2 standard 10mm bolts. When I crawled under there, 1 of the 10mm standard bolts was missing, 2 torx heads stripped to a perfect round circle, and another 3 or 4 missing.

Granted, it shouldn't take but like 2 minutes to undo all of these, but having to get the dremel, extension cord, go to the store to buy cutting bit because I didn't have any more, dremel the notches, etc to get those stripped torx bolts added some time. Because I've always had bad luck with dealerships and oil changes, I checked to see if I could get the drain plug loose. I was amazed that it wasn't overtorqued. Then I checked to see if I could get the filter loose. No dice. Wasn't my car and I was out of time for the day, so I opted not to go the extra mile of destroying the filter while attempting to get it off. I've heard some horror stories about siezed filters and I wasn't about to potentially mess up someone's oil filter adapter, especially since it's their only DD.

IIRC, when you put it on a lift, you can also snake in there and remove/drain everything. It just makes a huge mess.

Nothing exciting or worth posting in The Garage for, but wth. Put new tires on my car today. Michelin Defenders. I had used the Michelin Hydroedge tires the last time I changed and was really happy with them (I had 86,000 miles on them today when I had them changed and could have squeezed to the advertised 90k but no reason to push it) and these are basically the next gen of those.

Here's to another 90,000 miles on this car hopefully! (154,000 at the moment).

Adam8778 came over today and we fixed Big Red; loose injector crossover tube on cylinder #1 was the culprit. I actually spun a tire tonight and hit 70 on an on-ramp with it this evening!

We also fixed adam's fuel level sender and wired some aftermarket gauges in his Cummins.

Yesterday swapped out my OEM pads for Carbotech XP10s and flushed all the stock fluid out, replaced with Motul RBF 660. Then bedded in the pads on a few desolate roads

I think these brakes are gonna tear my OEM tires to pieces. With 60% pedal pressure I can engage ABS at 80 mph

Replaced a light bulb the other day. Coulda sworn it was the pedal sensor since the bulb looked alright. Even the ohm meter verified that the bulb wasn't shorted...

my dumb Prelude (last generation, Type SH) started throwing the low oil pressure light the other night. plenty of oil in the engine, no leaks, nothing abnormal happening. so either the pump is going bad (is that even a thing that really happens?), or the oil pressure sensor/sender is bad (or has a bad/dirty connection).

either way, that shit is buuuuuuuried behind the intake mani, the oil filter, and the trans ATTS unit. fuck getting to it. i'm probably just gonna have AAA tow it to a shop to have them fix whatever is wrong. last thing i wanna do it spend all saturday getting to the sender just to find out that the pump needs replacing.

so now i'm back to daily'ing the S13

P.S. anyone know of a good repair shop near Jamestown/Greensboro?

It's probably just the sensor. The sensor was lit on my Integra for a 2-3 days and I checked everything out and all was good. So I figured it was the sensor and go figure the light went out on it's own and hasn't returned (this was back in early summer).

If you don't want to pay whatever sum the shop is going to charge you just start monitoring your oil pressure via an app on your smart phone
