i'm sad we lost. i hope that since next week we have a bi or whatever then the next week i can play again. i really hope. i'm going to the ortho tomorrow...i also hope i can run in my 1/2 marathon which is my first priority (no offense...but training for 6 months, kind of a bummer if i can't). but i feel like shit not being able to play. did you like the water?

i am sad we lost. not that my soccer playing ability would have helped but at least for subbing i could have been of assistance.

sorry, team

JT is going to yell at me a lot to hold the line, and I'm ok with that.

I am going to be a hardass to these people who refuse to show up to practice."

That sounds like my team because...

I am not leaving goal until we find a goalkeeper

I am a CB when I am not in goal

I yell at people to mark up and step. I just wish some of them would do that.

I too am pissed that people don't want to practice. Some can't because of work, but the rest could if they really wanted to.

I'm sorry but if your practice in a rec soccer league is anything other than small sided scrimmaging, then it's fucking dumb

^^My team just started playing together and I would like to get at least 11 guys there, so we could have a 10 vs 1 full field scrimmage, but it doesn't look like that is going to happen.

When I played for Hibernian, we did practice set pieces. Believe it or not, it helped.

Now, we do short-sided because people don't actually COME to practice. We have some beginners on the team who would benefit from passing and trapping drills.

I find it funny that you think it's "fucking dumb" when even the pros work for a majority of the time on their fundamentals.

Yep! The only team I ever played on that was good spent the entire practice working on set corners and playing full field 11 vs 4. Everyone on the 11 man team had to touch the ball before shooting and there was no shooting outside of the six yard box since there was no gk on the 4 man team. That type of practice really got the team passing together well during the games.

I find it funny you're comparing an adult recreational league training regimen to that of fucking professionals.

It's for fun, it's recreational, you should take it as serious as you'd like to. Expecting the majority of people to take passing drills in a play-for-fun league seriously (or to actually come to practice) is dumb.

If there are people who want to do it, fine. I can just say I've never played on a team like that where people would waste time on drills but whatever.

Yeah I tend to agree... Practice for a C and Co-ed League is a little much. I can understand wanting to get together pick up games/short sided games (that's what we did for IM soccer) and what not, but actual drills.... Playing in a top division would be different.

agreed. i don't think doing drills is dumb. but i also suck so maybe that is why. and isn't it good to work together to build team chemistry? i mean even if everyone on the team is amazing it doesn't really help if you can't work together to pass the ball and stuff.

i dunno, i'm just a girl.

passing drills are pretty worthless in these leagues. especially if you're only practicing as a team once a week. passing/trapping ability is rarely the #1 problem of a team. 98% of team have problems with communication, playing as a team, and keeping shape. if you're not doing keep away/small sided, it's going to be a waste of time in the long run.

Basic arithmetic is worthless when you're an accountant.

I think what you "too cool for practice" cats need to realize is that most people aren't having fun if they feel like they're embarrassing themselves. Confidence in your game is just as important at the grassroots level as it is if you're hitting chip shots over the keeper at the World Cup final.

Practice helps to build confidence in yourself, as well as your teammates.

Here's another example:

Let's say I just bought a guitar. I want to play it. But I'm afraid I'm going to mess up. So I just let it sit there. What fucking good does that do? What sort of sense does that make?

You guys are sitting there telling me that practice is pointless, when I know for a fact otherwise, and I know for a fact that the majority of the teams in this setup hold practices at least once a week. Get a fucking clue.

[Edited on August 25, 2010 at 6:00 PM. Reason : I'm gonna call CASL and tell them to cancel all practices, because at their level it doesn't matter.]

^ Confidence can be gained in small side/pick up as I suggested... If you feel it is necessary to work on the fundamentals such as trapping, passing, etc. then you can do that with one other person on the side not at a "team practice". Or get one of these:

Edit for CASL comment: When you play classic/challenge soccer you are likely with the same team for 5+ years! And you are able to hold practices at least 2x a week. CASL soccer and Adult soccer (especially C level) are not the same league. In CASL you are the best of the best in the area, I don't think that these adults are claiming that they are the best in Raleigh especially since they might be embarrassed because they don't have basic fundamentals. .

^^ Agreed the biggest obstacle in this kind of league play is becoming familiar with your team and communication.

I never said fundamentals were worthless. But does practicing them for an hour once a week make that much of a difference in a rec league?

Nobody's "too cool for practice" if the practice involves the fun parts of the game, small-sided team games or keep-away of some kind, which is what I originally said. And doesn't that give you an opportunity to work on fundamentals and build confidence anyways? If there's a group of players that really need the extra dedicated drills, then by all means, go for it... but to expect an entire team to show up for it is just dumb, in my opinion. Obviously it's more than just me that feels that way or I'm sure you'd have your entire team showing up and doing short-short-longs every week.

You guys still don't have a fucking clue what you're talking about, and at this point I don't have to justify anything to you, but here I go anyway:

We aren't running drills, it is short sided - as I said before

We practice at least 2x a week

And again I'll point back to my previous team's improvement at defense when all we did was practice set pieces. You're right - we did get people who didn't think that was "fun" and they didn't show up to practice.... and they were also the ones who got caught out on defense in games because they didn't know what the fuck to do.

As far as CASL being the best in the area.... well, that's tough. Considering how they're the ONLY THING in the area I guess you're right. Which sounds a bit like TASL..... unless you're fluent in spanish and hang out with the latin community and can play in La Liga games. But La Liga isn't even sanctioned. But seriously.... call those kids. Let them know they don't have to practice anymore, since they're not playing professionally and all.

^^I wish my team would practice, so we can pwnt your team this Saturday. The weather is going to be great Saturday and we have a 4:00 pm kickoff at the beautiful and redone TBP field 2, so it should be fun no matter what the outcome is.

Oh...and Friday Night Soccer is back for those of you who can't find a team.

OH MY GOD PASSING THE BALL AROUND IS THE MOST RIDICULOUS THING I'VE EVER HEARD OF.

I swear I've read some of the stupidest statements in this thread.

Quote :

LOL. God forbid you waste your time improving your skills.

Quote :

If you are not the best in the area, you shouldn't practice? Do you wear a bike helmet around your house?

The only acceptable argument posted is that you can't expect everyone to show up to a rec practice. But, that's one thing. To say that practicing, in any form, is "stupid" may be the "stupidest" thing I've ever heard.

It looks like you're one of the exceptions but I'm assuming most of the people who are paying to play in a men's soccer league have a decent enough grasp of fundamentals that an extra hour or two a week doing drills (without any proper instruction from a real coach) is not going to do shit. If you want to work on improving your skills, I'm not hating on it. I go outside and juggle and pass to the wall and dribble around all the time.

Try reading that again. I'm saying that there is a reason for them to keep their fundamentals sharp and practice 2-3x a week. So in their case drills and such are a good thing. I was responding to kiljadn who was comparing CASL soccer to TASL.

Next time actually read before you call me out.

The only team I ever played on that was good used to line up in formation and our coach would make us pass to certain people as we went down the field. After we did that then we would line up in formation, kickoff, and do a full field scrimmage of 10 vs 4, or less. Every player on the 10 man team would have to touch the ball before we could shoot and we couldn't shoot outside of the 6 yard box, if the 4 man team didn't have a goalkeeper. The 4 man team had the duty of stepping into the passing lanes while applying very little pressure.

We did a great job of holding shape and passing as a team on game day. We would make lots of short passes and worked together really well without even thinking about it.

It is a better way to play keep away and work on passing than to stand still in a circle or square and pass around 2 people. You don't stand in a circle on gameday and exit the center by stealing the ball. My team might be playing better had we been able to do shadow drills as you call them. One guy sent out an e-mail after our 6-1 loss and said, "I think we have a lot of good players, we just need to get used to playing with each other." Playing 10 vs 4 is a good way to get used to playing together.

we would do some intense drills if we were playing someone like leesville or green hope...but coach would just roll a ball out and we would scrimmage for half an hour if we were playing a lesser opponent like new bern or someone of that ilk
